This is a short film (a fast paced preview of a larger effort) by MAYA Design created to put some perspective on the invisible but fast approaching challenges and opportunities in the pervasive computing age. For more information please visit: maya.com/practices/research Really interested in the implications of a trillion-node world? Read Dr. Peter Lucas's seminal white paper that not only predicted this sort of scaling and complexity but outlined some of the resilient patterns that we need to follow to get there from here. maya.com/portfolio/the-trillion-node-network

Who would have thought? The human body as a model for singularity type computing, makes me think of the sci-fi-ish neohumanism. Awesome video.

Why will there be trillions of computers? There are only billions of people.
  • Trong Nguyen 16 days ago
I'm not sure if there would be necessarily trillions of computers, but take a look at it now.

I am one person. I own a laptop, a desktop, an Xbox, and a cell phone. That's already 4 for me. If everyone had all four of those, then we'd be at 24 billion.

But fast forward to the future, our TV's could be computing and communicating with each other or with the sound system, Ebooks will be surfing the web, and your car could be talking to another car. List a few simple household items and you're getting on your way to a trillion. There are tons more examples, but I hope you get the point.

Great Thought ! I myself never thought of so many objects we do depend on and ones we don't.
I appreciate people such as yourself to look at something that appears difficult for some of us to grasp. Thank you for simpflying the idea.

@Joshua: We are not talking computers here but any electronic device: fridges, elevators, cars, planes. On top of that there will be sensors connected to the internet: measuring the temperature in every house/street, measuring the densitiy of traffic all over the world, taking care of elderly people by watching their movements etc.

Number of outlets, breakers, light switches in world? 300 billion. That's a start. Freeze frame the front page of the newspaper (full screen view) and read a story about what will happen if a fraction of those outlets are networked.

Informative video. Enjoyed it a lot.

But why did visions of the Borg keep popping in my head? :-)

very nice! It is interesting that CPUs are already approaching 1 billion transistors here shortly.

    Trillions concepts should be in
every school system to show youth that many jobs are going to computers.

I've watched this video at least six times now, and something just dawned on me - the narrator reminds me of Ira Glass. MAYA here has perfectly captured the instantly comprehensible way he explains things on "This American Life." Bravo on both the informative video and a carefully crafted work of storytelling.

Well, we are very big fans of Ira Glass and appreciate the comparison (though we're far from his level we try our best). He is a master and his show is the gold standard for finding wonderful tangible stories about important subjects. Thanks you made our day!
