Venice's People: Canon 7D 24p
Fourth in the unintentional "series", after Sofia, Dublin and San Francisco.
This time it's Venice Beach in LA that is the focus.
Very different from the other 3 in that all the sound and music was recorded on location using just the simple Rode Video Mic plugged straight into the 7D.
Big thanks to Sara Collaton saracollaton.com for inspiring and for her cameo as she adds much needed glamour to the piece.
New version graded with Magic Bullet Looks.
More on my blog at philipbloom.co.uk. Where I talk about what gear I used to including lenses, filters and support.

Wow Philip, nice piece here.. I lived in LA for 5 yrs and would frequent Venice just to people watch.. It's where I saw my first Canon XL1 in real life, Ha ! Seems like a looong time ago.. Funny how Venice seems to be this timeless enigma that just keeps running.. Was it your first time there ? This is one of my favorite video's of yours just cause it feels so raw and representative of Venice beach... Very nice.. You gotta do the 3rd street promenade next.. Some crazy talent there..
Love and Aloha, iamKP-
well done

for me, this "series" begins to be a kind of (also unintentional) statement about human condition.
thanks!

As well as showing off what cock slappingly good video the 7D can produce, for me this video has also propelled your 'people' series into something more serious and interesting, and I really look forward to seeing how far you can go with it. Great work!
impeccable skill too.
I think every homeless man I've talked to on the street has a story about Vietnam.
i'm curious how much footage did u have / got for this.
... greetings from germany
But really, great work keep making these.

Just feels like the beginning and end of a much longer documentary. I hope you will do much, much more non-fiction with "real people" from places around the world. Thanks for your efforts.
Loved the documentary feel to this one. Audio sounded great, and loved that musician's guitar playing!
Was that your lensbaby thingamajig used in the basketball court shot?
The editing was perfect!
Very cool stuff.
Sounds is great on this one. Is 5DmkII the same or less quality? Or do you want external sound anyway?
makes me wanna go back to Venice beach!
and get a 7D :)
but no, toys aside, nicely done film
Question. Do you think your last two, Venice and San Fran (5D) @ 24P would show well in a movie theater via digital projection? Do you think the average movie goer would notice a difference in the 5D's converted 24P and the 7D's 24 P on these two pieces?
I miss my Rode VideoMic. Thanks for showing me I should purchase another one. :)
after watching People of San Fran. via Philip Bloom i was thinking wow i wish there was more of that guy singing at the end. the audio is fantastic, is it the stereo rode video mic?
it looked like you used more than one lens, correct me if i'm wrong; the basketball shot and one of the watch tower shots (3:30) seemed like a wide-angle; both of which have bands in the sky... i know magic bullet's vignette feature does that sometimes ~ but i guess that's not it this time.
anyhow ~ neat work, thanks for posting.!
And on ThiS dAy, you were a film-maker ... u dig?

Just wanted to add how much I like the shot at sunset playing hoops ... I've spent many days on that actual court playing, so brings back good memories!
1. Did you get the guitar player all in one take?
2. Many people have commented about the camera overheating. Have you had this happen?
I had overheating on my pre-production camera but not my current one
Good images.
Thanx!
I'm a tv-director and I'm planning on using a DSLR as a "second unit" on a travel series...
I can imagin that, when skillfully used, that the material coming from the DSLR might even 'overglow' the material shot with the much more expensive Digital Betacam...
If you're doing any workshops in Europe some time soon, I will surely try to be part of that!
Thanks so much for sharing!!
Workshops are planned!
Fine work as always. Like a glimpse of the under-belly of society.
well shot and edited. i hope you are sleeping right now dude ;-)
Having dialogs gives it much more "meat", the visuals are fantastic and the cadence is great.
Inspirational.
Congratulations!
just wish you could've kept the non graded one up as well.
I really liked it!

I just saw the non graded version on utube. What picture style did you use?
Also, just watched your 5DMk2 DVD. Very informational. Thanks for sharing. Would recommend to anyone interested in the topic.
