See all Show me
I spent the afternoon (Sunday March 2nd.) at Odense Fjord. It was very windy and very cold, since I was standing still most of the time. However, making this short was well worth it.

For the first time, I used my new tripod - a Velbon Ultra Luxi L

velbon.co.uk/newvelbon/pages/ultraluxil.html

I love it. It's small and very easy to use / set up. Not perfect for paned shots, since it's made for digital cameras. I might get a fluid head for that or make a motor to do it for me :)

Another first for me is my new Cokin P filters ( cokin.com ) - I used the 'Gradual Tobacco T2 Soft' (Cokin# p125s) all through this short. It works just like a colored ND filter, giving the footage a very 'golden' look and the sky doesn't 'blow out'.

The footage is pretty much straight out of the camera. No contrast / sharpening was added. Only transitions and text. No cropping was done to it. Some of the images that are fully zoomed in, show just how windy it was today. I was shouting at God to please let me have one f...... decent shot. Then again, I was cold and hungry and really wanted to go home :D

In this short you'll see oss.dk - Odense Steel Shipyard - also called the Lindoe Yard. It's owned and run by maersk.com who build the world's largest container vessels here. The ship you see (at 7.000 TEU) is not one of them. The last of 7 giants (11.000 TEU) just left the yard a few weeks ago.

Parts of Odense Fjord are set aside as a bird sanctuary. I guess the birds love the strong winds - plenty to see during these 4 minutes.

Hope you enjoy it.

Very nice! :-) I like the effect the grad filter gives. Where did you find filters for the HG10?

Have a look at cokin.com - look at 'Cokin Creative System' it's fairly cheap if you consider how effective it is. I use the P series but the A series is cheaper and big enough if you only use it for the HG10. I will be using the system on my Canon 30D digital camera as well, so I went for the P series just to be on the safe side.

I purchased my filters online at an English photo shop - much cheaper than any Danish store I have seen - cambrianphoto.co.uk/listprod.php?cat=39&mc=39 - call them and ask for Chris Smart - don't use the online shop :)

    NICE

    I really like this look.
Could you tell ma about the filter number is it a p125L or p125S od pro125 ect..... I assume you use the 55mm holder and need a step ring from the camera thread to a 55mm?

    Very very nice

You have turned me on to filters THANKS ;)

    Hi Pauly

The cokin.com site explains everything you need.

    I use a 43-55 step-up ring. The filter is the P125S.

    Look here:

    thanks Rico

Can I ask what program you are using to edit.

The reason I ask Is I have Sony vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 and have read that it will not open the .mts files. They need to be converted to .m2ts files

So I just thought I would ask

I use the same software. I downloaded the trial version (8.0d) from their website and it works fine for me - however I too had problems with version 8.0c.

    sonycreativesoftware.com/download/trials/moviestudiope

I think the older version only worked with Sony's version of AVCHD files.

Yes you are correct. I just had a .MTS file provide to me and was able to open and edit in my vegas (version 8d)

I also wanted to add that I was looking at the HG10 but the new sony SR11 is really keeping my interest.

So I just need to get my hands on it to get a feel for it. after that I'll make my choice.

The Clips I have seen of the new sony are great but I still question the low light perform.

But no matter which camera I get, I am getting the cokin filter set up.

I have to say I just watched this again and just love the look.

Great Video. I have this camera. What did you use for the focus setting? IAF? I am thinking of buying this filter. Expensive?

  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] 8 months ago
YES, Instant AF. I paid 20 to 30 USD pr. filter.

Very Nice. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the image of the old time painterly landscape vs the factory smokestacks and the swans.

Could you not achieve this effect in post? Great video by the way, nice colors.
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] 7 months ago
Many things can be done in post but you cannot bring out clouds that were lost due to the sky being overexposed. The color could have been added in post, I guess.

At 3:12 and on the image is kinda bad. It's the rolling shutter problem I think....
See how it shifts in the middle and all over the place?
Otherwise it would have been splendid capture.

Well, as the title says, it was a very windy day. The HG10 has the exact same mechanics as the HV20 - only difference is the hard disc drive and the mpeg4 compression.

The shake came from the strong winds... So, go ahead and buy a HG10, if you want :)
