1. Carnival protest against clone towns and urban deg…
2 years ago
This is a 30 minute film with clips from street theatre and a carnivalesque protest organised by the Carnival of Culture in Lancaster (a historic town in the north of England near the Lake District). Developers from out of town are in the process of obtaining permission to build a huge retail outlet here. We feel this will damage the existing town centre which at present has a mix of independent shops and small business premises owned by local people. Instead of the site being turned into more clone shops, expensive flats and car parks we want the area to have affordable housing, space for independent local retailers and a cultural quarter that is not owned by corporations.
The Carnival of Culture is a network of artists, musicians, writers, activists and other residents concerned about the demise of culture, creativity and diversity in clone town Britain.
