Peppino is my adopted grandfather. He is a painter I see every Thursday at the Y. He loves to speak Italian to me, even though I only understand a tiny bit of what he says.

He is 87 (you can hear him tell me he's "ottanta sette anni"), and was born in Poland. After losing his entire family in WWII--from what I can piece together--he ended up in Sicily and learned Italian a word a day, then went to medical school in Rome, and decided to move to America in his early 30's.

But that's not what he's talking about here.

People should listen to old people more often. Young people like me are idiots who think they know everything.

Shut up, Charlie. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Can you translate any particularly good bits for us?

    It's a plesure!

First he said: "you're so beautiful, I like to speak italian with you, lady!"
He was very surprised that the "little camera" she was holdling was able to record his mouth moving and talking!! So when he understood it was a movie he said "I'm not old..I'm still young..I'm 87 years old!!"

hey valeria, am i wrong or does he say "con questo culetto nelle mie mani, che mi piace.." at the beginning of the clip?
  • Valeria 3 years ago
mm..yes he said something like that and then he said "lui non capisce cosa vuol dire avere......è duro!.." (avrei dovuto tradurlo?)

He has a very soothing presence. I love the sound of his voice both when he speaks Italian and when he speaks English. I think of him as somebody who would have been great to listen to back in the day when people gathered around the radio. He is great. Please continue to share more of him.
