60. The Only Moment We Were Alone
A place I used to go to a lot when I was in high school. A sort of refuge. Took a quick homework break to visit it.

(i film my shoes way too much, sorry.) I always wonder how my stuff would look if it was shot with an HD camera...but I really like my camera so I'll be sticking around with SD for a while.

Music is by my friend Peter Brant (Ben and Bruno).

    Ding. Try it.
  • hahah bling blingy!

I am gonna try it right now

okay yeah that just screwed up all the text i wrote after it

but yeah it worked! haha it does look like it .

Also the "It's a crocodile!" is from

    youtube.com/watch?v=LU8DDYz68kM

    Go to 3:35

haha i think she actually says "there's a crocodile!" but its still funny.

    That's a crazy video.

OMG, that shot at 1:40 !!!!! I love this video. :))
  • mitch phillips 2 years ago
    agreed, amazing shot
  • Haha Thanks Capucha and Mitch! Oh man..so let me tell you this...my friend Joe came with me and I tried to have him blow bubbles into the grass and it just would not work, and I tried to do it too...the grass and the wind wasn't having any of that. But I was determined. I have a "Bubblesaur!" It's this dinosaur thing (no surprise) that blows bubbles. I used him when I got home with minutes to spare before the sun disappeared behind the hills. (Such a nice time to film but you only have a short window of time to do it that lasts around 30 minutes). Actually let me find a link to it hold on...

    geardiary.com/wp-content/photos/474221120_444075103a.jpg

That little guy makes bubbles better than I can.

    :-)

I think in that shot.. the 1:40 you can see our reflections in it.

oh hey look at those weirdos hunched over the grass trying to film bubbles. hahah.

    Thanks friends love you <3

    good stuff
  • Thanks Sam! *tappity tap tap!*

    hee hee

I think I like filmming my shoes because I have so many of them. So far on vimeo I've filmed the owls, partridge, and now these green ones...I still have ice creams, unicorns and rainbows, cherries, skulls, guns, etc...haha

    Take care!

the bubbles on the grass...so beautiful..
but even more: the "birds" in the sky! :D
  • Remyyy plus 2 years ago
Definitely. These birds are just a fantastic idea.
  • Eric E. Anderson 2 years ago
Yep - the birds made me say to myself, "Karen is so creative".
  • Hahha chirp chirp!

Well Nina, Rems, and Eric....I tried to film birds (there were so many gulls and geese) but they kept flying in the opposite direction, or I kept missing the opportunity to film them when the pesky kids would run at them and make them fly, so I got frustrated and said "screw it" I'll just make my own birds, they'll go where I want them to, WHEN i want them to. hahaha

    chirp chirp chirp BEEP!

that's the sound my birds make.

    :-)

Wonderful video Karen... you are so creative. The fades, focus, crocs, paper, shoes, bubbles - great stuff. Seriously.
  • Hee hee thanks Mr. Anderson.

The crocodile...i wanted to have him walk into the water..but he kept getting stuck in the mud.

There's so much audio of me saying, "ugh fuck he's stuck AGAIN! Quick, get him out before he goes under the mud." Little bastard.

    haha

    Yeay for homework breaks! :-)

Your colors are delicious like candy mmm.

00:11 didn't even look real. It looked like a shot from lord of the rings or something. This video made me happy, what a cool place.
  • haha! I like how i spend about half an hour to an hour shooting but like 4 hours doing color correction. It's to make up for the less than mediocre footage that I shoot.

This place is really pleasant...well it's actually more gross and trashy than it was 5 years ago when I used to frequent it. Haha. I was talking to my friend that lives in this town and she said something like, how is it that you're able to make that shithole look nice? haha.

    Candy colors!

    nom nom nom
    CHOMP!

    Toodles mitch!

  • Ben Millett 2 years ago
Really, really nice. It looks like you had a good day. Do you do your color corrections in FCP? Very nice message.
  • I actually used to do all my color correction in Avid. Only until recently did I start using FCP. No fancy tricks just eyeballing for a couple hours on the built in color corrector. no magic bullet plugins or any of that. For more serious projects for school, I use Color, but I don't find that necessary for these silly little videos that I shoot arbitrarily.

But it makes a HUGE difference.

I spend little time shooting, but I spend hours color correcting :-)

    Thanks Dr. Millett! :-)

    Awesome once again karen.

where do you get your titles? Love them.
  • I either make them up, or I get them from song titles or books. (I see no harm in that since these are just dinky little for fun videos)

This one is the title of an Explosions in the Sky Song
No One Belongs Here More Than you is a book by Miranda July
Love Letter Typewriter is a title of a song by Mineral

I think those are the only taken titles, the others I just make up.

    Thanks a lot Ayz :-)
  • Ayz Waraich 2 years ago
Gotcha. The title of your tumblr you made up? I love that one.
  • It is a song by a band called the Notwist

called "one step inside doesn't mean you understand" the lyrics that follow that are the...one step inside doesn't mean i'm yours.

i love that song check it out! actually its on my clouds video somewhere on here

Your manner of speak in the videospace is attractive and simple. It tells us about the most important in life. All of the most important in life is simply and attractive.

    bubble-part is the best
  • Thank you so much :-) I think that everything I do is pretty simple, mostly because i just walk outside and shoot random things for an hour or so, no plan, just really arbitrary footage.

I love bubbles so much. Mostly their rainbow colors.

Nice work. You know I be diggin' the ground close-ups.

How do you get the HD ON thing? I want my things to look pretty too.
  • If you export anything that is over 800pixels wide, Vimeo registers it as "HD". So what I do is when I film projects, I bring them into a 720p HD Sequence, resize, color correct to adjust for pixelation...so it is given the "HD treatment."

"Fake HD" is hot. What do you use to edit? Message me, we'll figure it out!

That was really inspiring stuff, Karen. It caught me right from the beginning and I felt like I was transported in to a mystic and beautiful place right up until it was done and now I'm fully inspired to stretch my head a little further with video. Thank you, thank you, thank you! BTW: Your colors are gorgeous...
  • Oh Jacob, that was very very kind of you to say. Thank you kindly :-) I hope you have a wonderful day today in wonderland wherever your imagination may whisp you away to!

P.S> Thank you about the colour comment.

I love colour so much. I'm doing a B/W 16mm film right now and it hurts to do it.

    haha
  • Jacob Hokanson 2 years ago
I was thinking this morning that what struck me the most was your ability to capture the truly precious and beautiful moments that are hidden under the hussle and bussle of daily life. You have an excellent eye for the sacred. And how the heck do you get those colors anyway?
  • Aww thanks Jacob..Yeah my life is so busy so doing these little exercises is really therapeutic for me to do, and to watch. The colors are from hours and hours of sitting in front of the computer color correcting.

    :-)

i love the peacefulness of this piece, sort of a serene reflection on the places we grow up. very beautifully shot! Let's make movies in HD :)

p.s. how did you get the 2:35 to 1 aspect ratio.
    p.p.s. panasonic dvx-100B?
  • Aww thanks MACAFRAMA

I love watching your films because I see those all the time when i go to school in SF.

Plus guys on road/track bikes are exponentially hotter than lots of other guys.

    haha

    Aspect ratio...Final Cut Pro.
Camera. DVX100A and GS320 depending on where I am. I just make them match in post.

Beep beep beep have a good one!

Another winner! You snag our hearts, then you playfully send birds scribbled across notebook paper across a gorgeous blue sky. Beautiful work!

But, you know what? I'd really like to see a harder edge in your films. I'm requesting you step away from the green grass and the peace of a park on a lazy afternoon and give us something stark, something a little crazier. The city, perhaps? I dunno....something different. Something we wouldn't expect.

Don't get me wrong, I could watch a thousand of these short subjects you create, but even YOU have to have a more adventurous, jagged side to you. I want to see that! =D

    Just a request.
  • Haha. Agreed. Everything I've posted lately is stuff I shoot for about half an hour to an hour during homework breaks. I'm entirely too busy with grad school to produce anything of more substance. haha. Soon enough.

One day I'll be like Michael Bay and I'll send you some explosions and robots and stuff. hahaha.

Lately I've been into this therapeutic grass sky stuff. I'm saving the explosions for my 16mm films.

    haha

Thanks Paul. I'll see what I can do.

At us too spring. But leaves were not dismissed yet. Soap bubbles also do not burst. But the ground comes to life. The ice bursts. The snow has already thawn. And cats shout under windows about love.
  • The visual of "ice bursting" in my head looks amazing.

    You are fantastic Mariya.
