i had a discussion a few hours ago with a friend, about these "invisible lines" that make us connected to certain persons. And the feeling we get right away, like a silent mutual recognition or acknowledegemnt, when meeting them for the first time. This happened to me lately with a 90 years old man. As soon as I met him i "knew" we had something in common. I understood why, a few weeks later, and it just blew my mind.
Your video couldn't explain this feeling better. Thank you for that :)
  • That was a really wonderful story. I've had that happen so many time in my life where I would meet someone for the first time, but there was just something about them...something really special, some deep meaningful connection that was absolutely indescribable. And I have these feelings with people that I have platonic friendships with, I can't wait for the day it happens and I know that would have fallen in love with this person.

The world is more beautiful with dreamers like us. :-)

    You win again!

I didn't expect anything less from a new short subject from you. Very nice!!
  • no epic explosions this time, but soon. Unfortunately, now that my camera has died, I shall have to wait a little longer to make videos, or maybe get this fixed or borrow one. Technology is such a pain in the ass.

    Take care Paul!
  • Paul 7 months ago
Oh wow...that sucks. I hope you're able to get it fixed soon. =(

So nice. Which came first, the images or the text? And how did you get the grass under your feet to be a different color? This was such a nice gift for Charlie.
  • I had an idea of what text I wanted to have. I jotted them down in my moleskin while I was at church. (eh he). Then I came home and tried to make images to match them. (While I wrote the text I had images in mind, because I just shot in my backyard). However...when I went to shoot....my camera just stopped working. First the digital artifacts then the screen shut down and it wouldn't turn on. So I didn't get that much footage. Then I realized that the things I had written didn't match at all. At first it was going to be a bunch of questions...like a little kid asking questions about things....but then I realized that didn't work and it looked dumb. So I edited first and when i finished editing everything I watched it like 50 times and had a word document open next to it. I just typed what I felt or saw. Then I recorded the audio...so painful. Having to listen to your own voice is....sooo painful.

As for the grass. It had been raining recently, punctuated by hot blazing sun...so the grass actually did that to itself. When you walk on different patches of grass in my back yard, the colors change. :-)

Thanks so much Doctor. :-) Have a great week.

this was perfect. everything was so freaking perfect. i love it! the lines and the ants, and every word matching up with the perfect image. it means a lot.

and the tag. the tag! :-)
  • hahah i thought about the tag after i saw your photograph video, and i said to myself, "oh shit, yeah i remember I was going to use that tag from now on."

Thanks so much M. Maybe this summer my little ant will find its way to your little ant.

(i was watching the video play through while i recorded the audio because I didn't want to have to chop it up later...haha)

You bring sunshines to my days!<3

Many of my friends don't get what I am doing here... this short is the perfect explanation. This is what "video community" means - it's what makes Vimeo different from all the others. Karen, you nailed it!
  • Cat Anderson? What are you doing here? Other than purring around and getting kitty litter on everyone's videos. Hhaha. That sounded negative, but it is quite endearing.

I'm glad cats and dinosaurs can be friends on Vimeo.

    :-)

Very emotional stream of consciousness. Nice, Karen!
  • Thanks so much! Making a leap of faith by using something with my voice and appearing in a video...two things I really hate.

Cinematographer...behind the camera...not in front of.

    haha

Wow. You're very good at showing and telling people what they mean to you. You DO find ways and words. I love that. I wanna be like that ... some day in some way.
  • Haha I think you are/can be. I wish I knew more german. Hee hee. Sometimes I'm scared that what I say comes out too emotional or sentimental. Or that I knew better words, or could express myself in other ways. still trying to figure that out.

    Happy happy.
    (sorry about your camera)
  • Thanks Cammy wham city!

we have some catch up to do.

Yeah The camera thing sucks. but i still have my photo camera, so i can do some stop motion.

    If i'm not too lazy.

    haha

But i'm trying to find out whats wrong with them so i can fix them soon..hopefully. I may die without it. Actually not really, it'll be an excuse to get out and live a little.

wow. i mean, apart from the fact that i envy your ability to show the right pictures at the right time, i would probably be way too scared to express myself in such a way. lots of respect to you, karen.

Ok, first of all - I'm obsessed with you and your videos.

Secondly, I thought that the last thing you said in the video was 'I'm glad that we have fucked' and I was like KAREENNNNNNN O_O!!

    Thirdly, let's climb trees together.
  • Christopher...you are so sweet to me. Sooo sweet. like candies. the flavourful kinds.

haha i would never say such vulgar things..

    haha just kidding.

Only climbing the trees to compare breast sizes.

    Can u b my sifu..
seriously! i wish i can make video like u.
  • haha...unfortunately, I'm not good enough to be anyone's sifu.

Thank you for your very generous/kind words. They are really sweet to me.

The key to all my videos...

    is to just film
    what i see.

and let it do the work on its own. :-)
  •
  • Jacob Hokanson 7 months ago
It seems that you succeed at that, Karen. Your work is so appealing because, to slightly adjust a quote from Hemmingway: all you do is pick up a camera & bleed.
  • Haha...that's a pretty intense quote....but I guess somewhat true. Well especially in this video. I feel really vulnerable because I used my voice and appeared in this. I don't know if that makes sense...but I first uploaded this and had it private and didn't know if I should make it public. But now it's out...and you all know what i sound like/look like...especially with my thick thick mustache (i need a shave).

    hahaha

Thank you for your kind words Mr. Hokanson. Have a pleasant weekend!
  • Jacob Hokanson 6 months ago
I've been wondering why your films resonate so much with me (and obviously with SO many others) and I think what it is is that you have this incredible ability to capture the essential and very honest beauty of a moment or series of moments. I want to be able to do the same; to create videos that make people feel for the time they're watching it and long after that life is/can be soft, sacred, beautiful, moving...

I must say that by watching your videos, I have been inspired to new heights of appreciation and that quite likely 20 years down the road I'm going to say that Karen Abad was my first and foremost inspiration in video. I can't even begin to thank you enough for being that kind of catalyst.
  • This is the nicest thing I've ever been told...so nice I blogged about it. haha.

You are really really kind. And are inspiring to me. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. :-)

You probably heard this many time but this is really, really beautiful. I mean, this is really well said and the video is well made. I wish I could thought about these things to someone I really cherish the most.
  • Oh Dipta, thank you very much.

    You are too kind.

Doing these is like doing stream of consciousness...you just write what you see/feel and go with that.

    :-)

    Take care

  • Nolan (i like your name)....hush you...this videos are not special or out of the ordinary. Just look at things around you and shoot. Hopefully some sort of inspiration will come in editing. Haha that's what I hope at least when I do my videos.

Thank you for watching this :-)

wow this video just really makes you think about your connections with other people. friends, family, and even strangers. it just kinda opens your mind up to realizing that theres more then meets the eye. everything isnt as simple as it seems

sweet and beautiful video. love it
  • I wish i didn't hate my voice, because I'd like to watch this video again, but i can't really because it makes me feel comfortable to hear it. I shouldve had someone else read the text i wrote. haha

But more related, yeah I pay careful mind to connections i make with people.
  • AbOwLoFsUnShInE! 5 months ago
personally i think you reading the text makes the video what it is. wonderful!

and i hate my voice to haha. i think just about everyone does. its a human habit

  • haha something else..what are you looking for?

Sometimes I wish there was a way to rotate or circulate my older videos that get buried by the newer ones. Or maybe just not make so many. haha
