    Nice Richard! Beautiful colors.
Images are very contrasty. What was your camera set up?

Hi Ronaldo. I use 25P, Tv mode and try to use 1/50s shutter. However it was a bright day and I do not have any ND filter, so for a lot of the shots I had to set the shutter to 1/250s. I also think that Tv mode tends to overexpose most of the time, so I usually hit the exposure lock and drop the exposure by 2 or 3, until only the brightest parts are showing 100% zebra. Sounds troublesome, but it's quite fast once you get used to it.

Looks great. Definitely the HV20/HV30 like to overexpose at times. What's the benefit of the Tv mode with such a low shutter time in daylight? Wouldn't you get less shallow field of depth? Or is that the reason you use it?

Hi Lucien. With the usual shutter speed of 1/50s, the aperture goes to around f11. Unlike with still cameras which have large sensors, small aperture settings on this type of video cam do not produce sharp images. There is a phenomenon called diffraction that causes the picture to go very soft when you close the lens down.

I would prefer to shoot no smaller than f5.6, which is why I use a faster shutter until I can get some ND filters. With the right ND filter fitted, I should be able to get a larger aperture at 1/50s which is my aim.

And here's some footage I took yesterday with my other cam, which does have ND filters built in. This was taken at 25F with 1/50s shutter.

Thanks! Interesting I have to test this... I know I can get a sweet spot with my digital camera at a mid-range F stop but didn't know that camcorders have this at smallest aperture. Also I can see you get a longer depth of field so everything is more in focus.

Hi Lucien. Yes it's even more important for video cams. BTW, the sweet spot is near the widest aperture, not the smallest. Just in case I wasn't clear.

The reason that my DOF is so large is just due to the small sensor. Even at wide apertures the DOF is not that narrow, except when you zoom in on the subject.

    Well done Richard,

Another under the belt for CANON HV30.
Ha...it seems you are falling in love with the HV30.
Yes very very easy to achieve great results if you
know what you are doing as i have said a million times.

    Cheers

Ok Richard, maybe the high shutter speed and the F number explain the "low pedestal" feeling of the images.
I would sugest you to by a N6 or N9 ND filter.
    Best wishes

    I mean "to buy..."

Hi Ronaldo. I bought this camera the day before I had to leave for an overseas business trio, and I was not able to find any 43mm ND filters in the short time I had. I couldn't find any in Haifa either. This will be the first item I want to buy when I get home to Singapore. N6 is 2 stops and N9 is 3 stops, is that correct? If so, that sounds ideal.

And I made a mistake about the 25P. I set the cam to 50i that day because there was some other stuff going on that I want to apply slomo to. Sorry about that.

Yes Richard, N6 is 2 stops and N9 is 3 stops.

OK, thanks Ronaldo. I will look out for those when I get back to Singapore next week.

Struggling to get 43mm filters in Singapore, looks like I will have to buy from overseas. :(
