The problem with upscaling an mpeg file is that it amplifies the blocky compression used. For better results I try and use the original file as an uncompressed avi - although they can be several gigabytes in size and then export them in the H.264 format. Better still, use a camera that can do this natively - some can be had for as little as 150 GBP.
Nice goose and it was very obliging posing for you like that ;-)
Yes, this and the other goose video were upscaling exercises, but more to see the relative qualities of the original PAL mpeg-2; Xvid, H.264 conversions and the resulting vimeo .flv downloads. (Actually the 1280x720 deinterlaced Xvid and H.264 at 4000 kbps are virtually indistinguishable from the captured 720x576 mpeg-2 file)
The .flv downloads returned at a bit rate of between 1500 and 2000 at 25fps which isn't too bad. I just wanted to see how vimeo handles HD conversions to FLASH with a couple of small experiments using some of my own stuff.
Eugenia Loli-Queru reckons that you can use 1048x576 (16:9) PAL upscaled to 1280x720 and it looks OK - but, like you say, it is better to capture and edit in uncompressed .avi and export in H.264. I'm not particularly bothered about that just now, because I'm still mainly working to create SD DVD quality stuff and things that I upload here are just a few scenes taken from those compositions - so I don't really want to capture in AVI only to compress it after editing to mpeg-2.
And a HD camera, can the robot give me one as an Easter present????
Looks like you have got "Memories of Tyneside" sucessfully uploaded this time - I'll have a look at it later and get back to you with what will be only POSITIVE comments for a "likely lad" such as yourself...
Happy Easter bud ;-)
