This is my first video with my first video camcorder, Canon HV30. Still not sure what I am doing, but ya got to start somewhere.

Canon HV 30 (with Canon TL-H43 telephoto converter).
Tripod.

Settings; 30p with Cine mode (if that is possible, I selected 30p first, then changed the program mode to Cine Mode)

Edited using iMovie 08.

Trying to learn how to get correct exposure in high contrast areas. Some minor camera shake near the end of the footage

Looks good. You'll get less blow-outs using cinemode and you wont get any in-camera sharpening and the tonal range will be flattened. All of which can be added in post-process. That's the beauty of cine-mode.

Oh, BTW, once you shoot 30p, you'll never shoot 60i. Great footage....Where is this??

Tony, it's in South Carolina USA. Between Charleston and Columbia, off of Interstate 26.

Your first? Excellent. I saved it. thanks
BTW, 60i good also. You get smoother video and is better for sports and other fast action. 60i is also good for slow motion.

really great scenes you captured. I seems trhe most animal where not very shy. I have not expectet this. Or did you use a trick?
  • Joe Kegley 3 months ago
    Hi Marcus,

Nope, no tricks, all the footage was shot in the wild. Though I will say that the pileated woodpecker, who are normally very shy, for some reason wasn't so shy that day. I definitely got lucky with the woodpecker footage. The owls can be found frequently off the boardwalk at Francis Beidler Forest, you just have to be patient and stay all day long.

Nice footage, loved the owl and woodpecker shots.
Nice timing of music with the owl.

Music was from the the iLife Sound Effect collection found in the 'jingles' folder. The loop or song is called 'Jaracanda.caf'
