This clip was something I put together last year back when Will Smith's 'I Am Legend' film first appeared at the cinemas and contains footage from the stunt scene which appears in the opening scene of the movie. I'd managed to shoot this from the Empire State Building one Saturday whilst we were in New York in late September/October 2006. They kept shooting this scene over and over again, but I only had the patience to videotape just one of the takes.

Down on the ground where they were filming it was crazy.. No one could get access, the cars and cabs were losing their patience, and if you had a camcorder like me, you weren't allowed to shoot anything. I got in trouble myself once, but what do you expect being a tourist from Australia :) Although high on the Empire State Building they couldn't stop me, and I had a much better view from there too!

The footage itself originally looked pretty rough. I was using a Sony (piece of crap) HC1 back then which had some serious video noise issues, just like a lot of other affordable Sony HD cameras. Thankfully though I've managed to clean it up quite well. Firstly by adding more noise in Vegas to even out the Sony noise and then running it through the Magic Bullet 'Green Pearl' preset. That last one probably helped the most.

Yeah, all I managed to shoot down on the ground was an ambulance driving past which obviously wasn't a part of the film. Although it was enough have myself and a few other tourist types believing we had actually captured an important scene from the movie!

What about the car spinning out at the end?

It was too far up the street from where they'd blocked it off to see anything. Even from the side streets was a bit tricky.

Thanks, yeah I thought I'd throw in some other scenery from up there to make it a bit more interesting.

That is some nice color work. I wish I could get me some MB. You made me want to get back to NY.

Color is very nice. Going to have to make my way up there to test those shots on the HV20.

I don't know how much they pay to have streets closed like that. As said before, colors are cool !!!

I know it must cost a lot. They were there for nearly the whole day.

Hi Alex, extremely late reply to this.. haven't checked this video in ages!
I liked that video of yours. Crazy, those xenon lamps.
We also saw saw American Legend being shot when we got off a train to visit a friend in Brooklyn our last night there. I can't remember the name of the station, but they had fake snow and some huge lamps set up. Looked impressive with the extras dressed up and old cars.

Cool footage! I love NYC! I have an hdr-hc1 and I've managed to get some decent footage for an affordable hd camcorder. I've had some issues (and I knew I would), that's why I got a 4-year warranty. I'm due for a new "affordable" hd camcorder...any recommendations?
  • Glenn (avene.org) 8 months ago
Hi Jim, yeah, my HC1 broke within the first week. I sent it to be repaired which took 3 weeks, but they just replaced it! Shouldn't have taken 3 weeks. By the time I sold it the zoom had already begun to wear out. After that I swore I'd never buy another Sony camera!
I've had the Canon HV20 since then and haven't had a single problem with it. Much better picture quality too, so I highly recommend it, or the newer HV30/HV40.
The Canon HF models are good too if you don't want to be using tape, except they're not as good in low light as the HV series.
