(English) In 1946, Magritte wrote in a letter to fellow artist André Breton: “I painted a picture, The Black Flag, which was a foreshadowing of the future bombing terrors. And I am not proud of it.”

The absence of Guernica, is made up for by the presence of the less well known and very different painting by René Magritte, Le Drapeu Noir (the Black Flag), which shows a representation of aerial bombardment. Painted in 1937, the same year as the bombing of Guernica by Nazi Germany. Guernica was where the Nazis first tested aerial bombing on a civilian population; later it would be cities such as London and Coventry.

It seems like the future that Magritte foreshadowed in 1937 is very similar with our time nowadays.

(Turkish) René Magritte 1946’da sanatçı arkadaşı André Breton’a yazdığı mektupta şöyle demiş: “Gelecekte uçan makinelerin olası vahşi bombardımanlarını öngörerek bunu vurgulayan "Korsan Bayrağı" (The Black Flag) isminde bir resim yaptım. Ve bununla gurur duyamıyorum.”

Magritte, bu eseri Nisan 1937’de Guernica’nın Nazi Almanyası tarafından bombalanmasına bir tepki olarak yapmıştır. Naziler, hava bombardımanını ilk olarak Guernica’yı sivil halka rağmen bombalayarak test etmiş ve daha sonra da Londra ve Coventry gibi şehirleri bu şekilde bombalanmıştır. Resmin yapılışı bu son bombalamalardan önceye denk gelir. Magritte'in öngördüğü geleceğin şu anda yaşıyor olduğumuz dönemle benzerliği var gibi görünüyor.
