The Letus Experience
A bunch of shots at the beach, abstract and absurd images from a 20 minute experiment. Trying out tele-shots and running with a 17mm wide-angle on my LEX rig.
Stuff used:
Nikkor glas: 180mm 2.8D and the cool 17-35mm 2.8 ED zoom.
Letus Rod support system
RedRock micro Follow Focus
Vinten Vision6 tripod
DVX100 MiniDV
Letus Extreme
Not graded in a quick and dirty edit with FCPS2.

Anyway the answer is no, no buzzing sound. The Letus is pretty quiet.
I heard it was soft, is that what you used here?
Wow that smog coming out of the factory in the distance is intense!
Okay I have to know how you got smooth shots chasing that unicycle? PLEASE!!
What is your shoulder mount?
As for smooth shots, its all just handheld. Only had a basic letus rods system at the time. I have always made shots like this by grabbing the camera, hold it as far away from my body as possible and then run. Its how I shot many tv commercials with broadcast DVCPro cams and it works just as well for this.
If you do that every day, you don't need to go to the gym.
My redrock shouldermount is coming in a few weeks, not sure if it will fit or if I will use it for running shots :)
I loved the surreal look of the subject and the steady cam without a steady cam shot worked extremely well.
I was thinking of getting the FlyerLE steadicam that can use up to 19 pounds, I wonder if it's as good as your skills! :)
Perhaps size helps? I'm 6.5ft so maybe long arms make it easier? who knows. Magical? More like shoulder breaking.... I've been throwing around 30lbs broadcast cameras for almost 25 years. It is not that difficult, I think if you can see it in your minds eye you will find a way to make it..
After getting this result I bought a steadycam, figuring this would make it ultra smooth. But found out 19pounds is not enough for a full Letus + camera rig. The only difference is that with a steadycam you can get longer smooth tracks, nice for walk & talks or doing a single shot video.
You can't do a 5 minute smooth track handheld.
Ahem.. all you need is knowing what you want to see right? And judging from your vimeo stuff I don't that's ever going to be a problem hehehe.
Besides what you saw was one shot, making one nice smooth shot a day is not that hard :)
(In the original edit you can hear me breathing heavy at the end hehe)
But this is bad news for me, if you are saying that the rig is heavier than 19 pounds!
Cause the FLyer LE is already 8K, I don't want to go up to the next level.
Now I am worried.
I will try to get some specs on weight from Letus, if they ever answer their phone.

Don't forget to add the weight of Nikon glass :)
And try to actually use this setup before you buy because: it is HEAVY :)
Thanks so much for your help and patience, Dutchland is obviously a fine place with fine people.
I am moving there, one day! :)
Hey no problem, its cool to share stuff you learned so others don't have to try it all again as well. Its why I started the group in the first place :)
And woohoo. cool, you live in Cali? because then we can do a house swap hehe to much rain here and too many people telling you what you can't do :P
Maybe I should move to Canada, there you can do whatever you want!
I went to school in MOntreal, Canada it is fantastic there!
I want to go and shoot there when I get my rig set up proper. You can do anything there, Ha, it's great.
California wants permits for everything, but I shoot with small cams sometimes and get away with it.
Yah, I was trying to buy from Letus Direct through their email system for information.
but I still don't have the rods right in my head.
Also have loads of family in Canada so when I stop buying film tools... canada here we might come!
A decent zacuto setup will set you back 4K with FF, if the Redrock shoulder setup turns out to be a dud you might need to forget about the steadicam for a few.... :(
One thing I do know is that the zacuto route is the best but none of them are perfect. Camera + Letus is just weird balance no matter what rig you put it on.
Canada is great there is NO doubt in fact, I am thinking about moving back there, the states has been hard to live in.
Montreal is the BEST, but the winters are hard, very hard.
The people are beautiful and you can get away with almost anything there.
I may just load up my hybrid and drive over.
Yeah about the REdrock, the wait is a month for the shoulder. And I am not sure if it's worth it?
It would be a shame to buy it and then still need the Zacuto.
I am going to figure out the weigh and costs of both, first.
The new L-riser rods don't have this problem but when I used them for the first time I found two of the four (they screw into each other, very clever!) are bend! (yes I know what your thinking.....)
I guess it is one thing coming up with funny ideas on paper but to produce high quality products is obviously something else.
Second time I get something from Letus that's damaged really hope they sort this out.
Anyway thats it for now, will keep you up to date when the RedRock stuff arrives.
