Great 17mm footage. I did some 17mm with a Tamron lens but the Nikon is very better.

Thanks, the Nikon 17-35 is a real gem but you must be prepared to live without food for a month to buy one :P

Maarten. As a soundtech, did you create the tune yourself with garageband? Sounds good. I'm still consider to buy a Letus rig for my Canon.
  •
  • Maarten Toner 4 months ago
Yes this is all stuff from garage band and soundtrack put together in FCP because it is just a bit of fun for now. If you got the money and time it is a lot of fun using a Letus Extreme... only prob is: lenses are really expensive.

You don't get a buzzing noise when your GG is perpendicular to the ground do you?
  • Maarten Toner 2 months ago
Odd, answered this one ages ago but it doesn't show up?

Anyway the answer is no, no buzzing sound. The Letus is pretty quiet.

Sweet footage, is your 17 - 35 the nikon?
I heard it was soft, is that what you used here?

Wow that smog coming out of the factory in the distance is intense!

Okay I have to know how you got smooth shots chasing that unicycle? PLEASE!!
    What is your shoulder mount?
  • Maarten Toner 10 days ago
It is the Nikon 17-35, and I'm not sure why people would cal it soft. It is very sharp edge to edge and almost no visible distortion at 17mm.

As for smooth shots, its all just handheld. Only had a basic letus rods system at the time. I have always made shots like this by grabbing the camera, hold it as far away from my body as possible and then run. Its how I shot many tv commercials with broadcast DVCPro cams and it works just as well for this.

If you do that every day, you don't need to go to the gym.

My redrock shouldermount is coming in a few weeks, not sure if it will fit or if I will use it for running shots :)

I have to say that you are an amazing figure of a man, because to get that steady a shot while running without a shoulder mount borders on the magical, maybe you're a wizard or magic man of some kind, or is everyone like this in Dutchland?

I loved the surreal look of the subject and the steady cam without a steady cam shot worked extremely well.
I was thinking of getting the FlyerLE steadicam that can use up to 19 pounds, I wonder if it's as good as your skills! :)
  • Maarten Toner 10 days ago
hah! thanks we where just fooling around really, first time shooting with the Letus. The guy on the monocycle is my dad. If you look at the right corner you see it shaking a bit because I had no proper place to grab the rig.

Perhaps size helps? I'm 6.5ft so maybe long arms make it easier? who knows. Magical? More like shoulder breaking.... I've been throwing around 30lbs broadcast cameras for almost 25 years. It is not that difficult, I think if you can see it in your minds eye you will find a way to make it..

After getting this result I bought a steadycam, figuring this would make it ultra smooth. But found out 19pounds is not enough for a full Letus + camera rig. The only difference is that with a steadycam you can get longer smooth tracks, nice for walk & talks or doing a single shot video.
You can't do a 5 minute smooth track handheld.

Ahem.. all you need is knowing what you want to see right? And judging from your vimeo stuff I don't that's ever going to be a problem hehehe.

Besides what you saw was one shot, making one nice smooth shot a day is not that hard :)
(In the original edit you can hear me breathing heavy at the end hehe)

Hahah, great story, :) 6.5 ft tall, wow , that does make a difference I think.

But this is bad news for me, if you are saying that the rig is heavier than 19 pounds!
Cause the FLyer LE is already 8K, I don't want to go up to the next level.

    Now I am worried.
I will try to get some specs on weight from Letus, if they ever answer their phone.
  • Maarten Toner 10 days ago
Well only if you use the Letus rig, BTW, if you check Letusdirect.com I asked Aaron to add weights specs for exactly that reason:
    letusdirect.com/letus35-comparison-chart.html

Don't forget to add the weight of Nikon glass :)

And try to actually use this setup before you buy because: it is HEAVY :)

Whoa you spoke to someone at Letus, they emailed me that they stopped Phone contacts for awhile and I was waiting for it to start up again, no luck for weeks.

Thanks so much for your help and patience, Dutchland is obviously a fine place with fine people.
I am moving there, one day! :)
  • Maarten Toner 10 days ago
Well Aaron at Letusdirect is very helpfull, you can always ask pre-sale questions in the support forum. He is a Letus reseller and gives great support. I think the Letus boys themselves prefer to just build stuff and not do too much support so I can recommend Letusdirect (.com) and no I don't get paid to say this (hey Aaron a free Ultimate would be nice!)

Hey no problem, its cool to share stuff you learned so others don't have to try it all again as well. Its why I started the group in the first place :)

And woohoo. cool, you live in Cali? because then we can do a house swap hehe to much rain here and too many people telling you what you can't do :P

Maybe I should move to Canada, there you can do whatever you want!

Okay when I get my new house, you're invited to the California coast, bring your girlfriend and we can shoot beach scenes!

I went to school in MOntreal, Canada it is fantastic there!
I want to go and shoot there when I get my rig set up proper. You can do anything there, Ha, it's great.

California wants permits for everything, but I shoot with small cams sometimes and get away with it.

Yah, I was trying to buy from Letus Direct through their email system for information.

but I still don't have the rods right in my head.
  • Maarten Toner 10 days ago
Nice, you got a deal....lets see if we can get my girlfriend to cali on a beach :)

Also have loads of family in Canada so when I stop buying film tools... canada here we might come!

A decent zacuto setup will set you back 4K with FF, if the Redrock shoulder setup turns out to be a dud you might need to forget about the steadicam for a few.... :(

One thing I do know is that the zacuto route is the best but none of them are perfect. Camera + Letus is just weird balance no matter what rig you put it on.
  • grokgod 10 days ago
Oh I think we can get her to Cali, tempt her with photos of beach and nightlife dancing.

Canada is great there is NO doubt in fact, I am thinking about moving back there, the states has been hard to live in.

Montreal is the BEST, but the winters are hard, very hard.
The people are beautiful and you can get away with almost anything there.

I may just load up my hybrid and drive over.

Yeah about the REdrock, the wait is a month for the shoulder. And I am not sure if it's worth it?
It would be a shame to buy it and then still need the Zacuto.

I am going to figure out the weigh and costs of both, first.
  • Maarten Toner 5 days ago
Just got a shipping notice for the RedRock shoulder deluxe + pod and some gears. Tried setting my EX-3 up with the Letus rods and I can tell you: what a nightmare, these rods are absolutely horrible after they have been tightened a couple of times they stay almost closed. Had to put my full weight on some parts to make them slide.

The new L-riser rods don't have this problem but when I used them for the first time I found two of the four (they screw into each other, very clever!) are bend! (yes I know what your thinking.....)

I guess it is one thing coming up with funny ideas on paper but to produce high quality products is obviously something else.

Second time I get something from Letus that's damaged really hope they sort this out.

Anyway thats it for now, will keep you up to date when the RedRock stuff arrives.
  • grokgod 5 days ago
Thanks for the update Maarten. Letus L-risers bending, not a good attribute.:) But now, I am thinking that the money for the Zacuto may very well be worth it after all the hassles with the others, although there is still the REDROCK version to try and since you have that on the way there. I will wait for your evaluation, hope you get it soon, since it says there is a 4 weeks wait for that deluxe package. Thanks again.
