about time someone told a story with their hv20

    Damn right!
The camera has so much capabilities to make your film be taken seriously by the watcher, especially with a 35mm lense, to give a nice approach to a cinematic look. This in contrast to lots of the vids out there, that give you that homevideo look, instantly reducing your interest.

    Nice short story!

    Thank you both so much

It is really refreshing to see a short film with a real story on vimeo.. I'm getting sick and tired of all the time-lapse films even though they might look awesome.

    looks fantastic.
Is that tuvan throat singing on the soundtrack?
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
It's Tibetan monks chanting for the arrival of the Dalai Lama

    excellent sound design! almost lynchian!

the colours were so beautiful, and i'm a big fan of how you didn't go down the path of making the wolf a clumsy caricature, but quite dashing. almost seductive etc. that's refreshing. and loved the gloves too.

Thank you so much! The character designs were all done by the wonderful Ms. Sarah Ann Head, who is technically an amazing animator but also a wonderful costume designer!

Absolutly love the camera work and cuts. It helps give that sense of urgency. Sound isnt the best but that seems to always be the more difficult of the two, [video & audio] to get.
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
Hopefully I can get the sound fixed up completely for the new cut tonight

Is it just me or is there a distracting line on the top of the video?

Other than that... brilliant work :)
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
There is a distracting line, and I don't know what causes it. It happens whenever I export my HV20 1080p footage using Premiere CS3

    Superb choice of music.

Thank you so much for your support, I love this style of music myself, but I feel that among the general populace it's unappreciated

Great!!! Though, the bear's head look -from some angles- like a giant teedy bear's one!!! Ha, ha!!

    Cool!!! ;)

Great storytelling. I loved the look and feel of it. Also thought the music fit perfectly with the theme.

Thank you! It's great to see so many people who actually enjoyed my music choices (many people require repeated viewing)

Nice job! what camera did you use? any DOF adapter, filters, lenses? Did you do any color correction?
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
I used a Nikon Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 with a custom 35mm adapter, and I color corrected on Premiere CS3 with Magic Bullet.

Very Cool Damon. The cloak put me in the mind of M. Night Shyamalan's The Villiage. The actress was perfect!

Nice video, really liked the raw atmosphere.

Also nice that you took the Butterfly-sentence from Death Proof... "The Woods Are Empty, Dark And Deep, And I Have Miles To Go Before I Sleep.."
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
    Technically it's Robert Frost...
  • Adam Holwerda 2 days ago
I thought it was "Dreary, dark and deep"? But yeah, I picked up on the Frost. Wasn't aware it was in Death Proof. Lol.

Awesome fable twist. The Tibetan bells, chimes and chanting had my senses begging for orange & yellow cloak combined with the red. Gota love the impurities from the 50mm lens. Well done! Oh.. and nice touch on the Nomad-damoN twist too!!

Thanks! I wonder how many people catch on to that...

Deviously well done. Jin-Roh is the only other Red Riding Hood story told well, of what I've seen. Yours is fantastic.
  • Damon Stea 5 months ago
Thanks so much! The original story concept was more inventive, but I'm happy with the way it came out. The fixed version should be released later tonight.

    G'day Damon.

A first class piece of work by all concerned. I particularly liked the understated soundtrack.

The dissolve at 0:41 was nicely executed and resulted in a very effective transition where Cassandra goes out of frame after a close-up to being in the middle distance :-)

    Bravo!
  • Damon Stea 4 months ago
Thanks! It took a long time to really get the transitions in the first minute just right.

Wow. The sound was awesome, the setting was magnificent, the costumes were amazing, the camera angles were unique. . . basically, you guys did great on the film! But to be honest, there was a minor consistency error (there was light outside when the wolf said it was nighttime or something) but don't worry about it. If snow was on the ground, it'd be too cold to go outside at night anyway. I look forward to watching more of your guys' films.

    That was super creepy.
Wearing a hood always makes me feel helpless, claustrophobic, and blind to attack. That tension is very similar to being afraid of the dark. Very nice.
Also, for some reason, the distortion on the wolf's voice reminded me of the distortion on the voice of the killer in "Black Christmas" over the 1978 style telephone. I wouldn't fix it, if you do intend, it's very creepy the way it is.
    Thanks

Only the end of the film is getting any more work, and that will have to wait until later this week. Glad you liked it!

    What happened to the Woodsman?
  • Damon Stea 3 months ago
I was trying initially to focus on the feminine aspects of the story, leaving as much of the masculine out (but obviously leaving the wolf as a sort of blend between the feminine and masculine components)
  •
  • Video by Wes 3 months ago
Without strong antagonists, protagonists can't become heroic.
Without strong masculine elements, feminine elements become irrelevant.
No Yin without Yang, not to say "masculine" is male, not to say "feminine" is female.
But the Woodsman was the Wolf's nemesis, no?
  • Damon Stea 3 months ago
I thought that the wolf's nemesis was really hunger, and that the woodsman was a sort of deus ex machina to keep children happy. I tried to stick closer to the original story, where there were no happy endings, just a shocking parable with a dark and somewhat twisted sense of reality.
  • Video by Wes 3 months ago
In the original story Red would have been eaten by the Wolf on the spot, had it not been for the Woodsmen working nearby.
Without that element, there is no reason for the Wolf to let Red go. Letting her go for no apparent reason, is more 'ex machina. If hunger was his nemesis, he would have eaten Red, then gone off and eaten the Grandmother. The Wolf also represents lust, and the lust was also held at bay due to the Woodsmen working nearby.
I'm thinking, if you wanted to emphasize the feminine aspect of the original story, you could emphasize naivete' and gullibility, for which the original story was created to warn against. Most of the rest of the story deals with the id.
Just a thought on Little Red.

Have you seen "Freeway" with Reese Witherspoon? Great handling of the feminine potential in Little Red Riding Hood story.
