Almost unchanged since it first appeared in 1885, the Lyle's Golden Syrup tin is a design classic. The dead lion and the quotation from Judges chapter 14, verse 14 were the idea of Abram Lyle, a Victorian sugar entrepreneur and religious enthusiast.

Golden syrup is inverted sugar syrup, made in the process of refining sugar cane juice into sugar. It is widely available in the UK, and is a crucial ingredient in Treacle Sponge, a classic British dessert. It is not so widely available in the US.

I was overcome by something halfway through this video that made me suddenly stand up and salute. Love the curly wurly bits 0:38 and later. Nice one Steve. You are becoming an accomplished artist and should possibly consider growing a beard and adopting a more bohemian hairstyle. Your current groove lets you down.

Man! HD is so cool. Could you do one of HP sauce and have the very rare Marty Feldman rendition of him signing the text on the bottle as background music? (I can only find his version in French)

Thanks for the comment. I hadn't heard of that Marty Feldman song before, but having researched it I've concluded that he only ever did it in French. It's here:

This is on my shopping list as it's an ingrediant in a beer I'll be making later this month.
  • SteveR plus 2 years ago
What type of beer is that?

I'm pretty sure it's Old Peculier, but I will correct myself when I get back home if it's another.

Old Peculier, I know it well:

It is a most pleasing beverage.

I checked and that is the next on my agenda. I like it as well. I'm not sure how my clone will turn out though because I believe they use their own special yeast. Maybe I'll film a taste comparison when it's finished.

Did you really delete my comment!? How very dare you.

The quality of your original comment did not meet my exacting standards.

Great video, amazing quality. Consider selling it to them as a commercial. Can I ask which camcorder you used?
  • SteveR plus 2 years ago
A Canon HV20. Thanks for the comment.

My Managing Director has just asked "What's with the dead lion on the tin"..or are they bees?, and is the lion dead at all? mmmm...

Great quality, I could have a lot of fun with syrup. Of course, syrup of figs would not be appropriate for a modern man such as myself who is not afraid to proudly flaunt his balding pate.

    Give at a "Like", slaphead.

After you've given this a "Like", direct your boss to this site, which explains the biblical origins of the image on the tin:

It is the wrong sort of 'Lyall'.

I'll be buying CSR golden syrup although Lyle's has a nicer design.

We grow our own sugar cane in Australia. In fact there is some sugar cane growing in my parent's garden that I planted in 1994.
