7. HF100 to HV20 comparison outdoors
NOTE: use download link to get 20Mbps CBR WMVHD encoding (1280x720). HF100 comes first, then HV20 always. Raw files:

HF100: rapidshare.com/files/104571128/00004.MTS.html
HV20: rapidshare.com/files/104572989/Comp1_hv20.m2t.html

Full gramegrab comparisons are posted in my review
lucienk.spaces.live.com/blog/cns%21A4AE3FB12A26635%21712.entry

IGNORE THE AUDIO (again)... I left the HV20 on.. The HF100 is pretty silent including zoom. I'll upload later HF100 clips with no HV20 background noise.

Where is the table with flowers on the HF100? I only see it on HV20.
  • Lucien Kleijkers 4 months ago
It's there but yeah I panned slightly higher...

So overall, do you feel the HF100 is worth the extra money.

I will always keep the HV20 for my old mini-dv collection. So I just wanted a decent replacement that doesn't exhibit the tape motor noise.

I believe the HF100 (MSRP) is cheaper than the HV30.

What do you think about the process of exporting into a format you can upload to vimeo vs the HV30?

  • Lucien Kleijkers 2 months ago
Very similar except for much faster uploading to PC (since it's a SDHC card) and second more CPU power required to decode.

at what frame rate did you record these clips in?
  • Lucien Kleijkers 4 months ago
All of these are 60i. This particular scene I also did in 30p to compare to see if there's less blurring (but I haven't posted this yet).

Here I used the original HV20 HDV you've provided and made a smooth 50P deinterlaced clip using virtual dubs bob-doubler filter and encoded in DIVX 6.8 Tell me what you think.. iv81.com/hd/deinterlaced_bob_doubler_hv20.avi I'm also getting HV30 in about a week, so I can only play around with the clips you provided so far. Hope you don't mind :P

NICE, very smooth! I should try that (I just created a custom virtual dub filter to remove CA but only thing missing is a proper desaturation method).

I still some slight motion blur (or is it focus?) but the movement is really fluid! I have to try that with the HF100 clips as well.
  • Steven I 4 months ago
Thanks, yes it does blur just a little but sharpen filter could be added after the other filters to counter the blur. The rest of the motion blur could be due to the part of your LCD screen refresh rate. You can pause the video at the time of the blur to see that the video itself is not so blury. The video itself is 59 FPS not 50 as I initialy had thought.

Hi Lucien - great video! I just got the HF100 as well! After learning that I have to rename the .m2ts to .mpeg, which was easy once I changed windows to show the full file name, then i could try to upload to vimeo. However, the video was shot with Full Quality at 1980, which I edited to 1440, but the vimeo upload failed. The other unfortunate thing was that I didn't realize that I couldn't upload my files from the HF100 to my mac!

So what did you finally wind up doing? I'm considering getting the HF100 but I want to make it as easy as possible to upload videos shot on the camera.

    I'm on a mac too.

Hi Lucien, Could you share the filter you use to remove CA? Why all the videos I have seen are 29,97 and not 30 fps?
Thanks for share your videos! (and your experiences)
  • Lucien Kleijkers 3 months ago
See this video for CA removal illustration using Sony Vegas Pro: vimeo.com/905817

29.97 is the NTSC standard framerate (in the US). In Europe it's 25 frames per second.

    Hi,

Yes I know that in USA the framerate for NTSC is 29.97 but I thought that HF100 expecifications says 30p. So you don't get 30 but 29.97, isn't it?

    Hi,

I check the link for CA removal (http://vimeo.com/905817) and the video is protected.
  • Lucien Kleijkers 3 months ago
    Should work now.

See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ntsc for more info why it's 29.97.

I know you asked us to ignore the audio, but the noise in the second half, is that just internal HV20 audio?!
  • Lucien Kleijkers 1 month ago
No an airplane it seems and some other noises in the neighborhood:-).

I've posted tons of other HF100 video's and you notice it's dead silent except for some slightly zoom noises. Here's 1 example: vimeo.com/946990

Just to clarify though, I'm more interested in the HV20's onboard sound. I am already assuming the HF100 is practically silent, but have read around the place HV20 is noisy. Just trying to figure out if the HV20 is too noisy for me personally or not. I'd buy the HF100 right away if it had a view finder.
  • Lucien Kleijkers 1 month ago
The first half of this video you can hear the HV20 tape mechanism pretty well. Pretty much the reason I bought the HF100. The HV20 is noisy and even with the external mic I use it's not perfect since the noise is picked up even from 4-5 feet away.

The HF100 screen is much brighter/better than the HV20. I didn't need the VF yet even in bright conditions but that's definitely also personal preference and your mileage may vary.

The HV30 is supposed to be slightly better isolated but also with slightly lower audio level (to mask the tape noise I guess but haven't tested this myself to confirm if true). Still the HF10/HF100 audio should be better.

Thanks, your efforts are appreciated. If it weren't for the high re-stocking fees I guess we could all just find out for ourselves. Thanks for your comparisons here and elsewhere!

Lucien, I understand that vegas pro supports AVCHD format, but do you have experience with bringing in AVCHD format into Adobe Premier Pro? Would I have to capture footage like i do with my DV tapes? or can I just change the file extension to mpeg like joanne jastatt suggested?
  • Lucien Kleijkers 18 days ago
You have to convert it first unfortunately (to HDV or other) for Premiere Pro. Couple of options (none perfect):

    1. Get (expensive) plug-in:
    blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2007/11/avc_hd_on_premiere_pro.html

    2. Convert first to HDV (several programs can convert AVCHD to HDV)

However most likely we'll see an update for Premiere Pro which would support AVCHD natively.
