I just upgraded to HD and purchased a Canon HV30. Here's a quick video I created using the first footage I shot with the new camera.

For anyone interested, the video was produced in Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and the Magic Bullet "Neo" filter was used to achieve the washed-out green look. The HV30 was recording at HDV (PF30) and set to cine mode.

thats a nice montage of shots.

Did you use a focus wheel?

    Nice :]

Yay! My first "comment" AND my first "like." Thanks, James.

I didn't use any add-on focus lense or filter. All the changes in depth-of-field were done using the built-in manual focus on the camera.

hey there bud, glad you found me! the camera looks great! i rented the hv20 but did not get to use the cine mode because the guy said it'd be harder to edit. well hopefully i'll get another chance at it.

my girlfriend & i both agree malena is very cute, hope to see more videos from you guys. good luck with everything.

Ahhh, yes. The infamous abusive, "Miche." God help me if I ever meet her in person! ;-)

As for cine mode being hard to edit, I think what the guy meant was that editing 24p footage is hard because of the 3:2 pulldown. Shoot 30p with the cine mode setting and you should be fine.

    I like it! :)

BTW, when replying to a particular comment use the "Reply to this comment" link and not the input box in the bottom, otherwise you don't do a direct reply and the person you reply to never gets an email about your reply.

Thanks for compliment, and thanks for the tip! It didn't even occur to me to use the "reply" link. Duh! :-P

Great example of adding shallow dof without using an adapter :)
How far away you were from your subject?
  • Clan McCloud 4 months ago
Yeah, it's a bit tricky using the teeny-tiny focus knob on the camera. I definitely need to start looking for a better DIY solution. To answer your question, I was about 10-15 feet away and about half way zoomed in.

Great little clip. Just got my HV30 too and it's good to see I am not crazy when I think good DOF is doable with it though it's certainly tricky, needs plenty of time... :)
  • Clan McCloud 3 months ago
Congrats on your new HV30. I've got a sneaking suspision you're going to be happy with it! DOF is definitely trick. You basically need a lot of room to get a nice effect. I recently purchased a DIY 35mm adapter from Twoneil. Hoping to shoot some test footage this weekend.

Nice!!!! What technique did you use to get the periodical white "flashing"?
  • Clan McCloud 3 months ago
The flashing is done by setting keyframes to the brightness/contrast controller in Premiere. Basically I keyframe a 6-frame animation. frame 1 (brightness/contrast = 0/0), frame 3 (brightness/contrast = +50/+50), frame 6 (back to zeros). Really simple technique, but a pretty cool effect.

Clan. Awesome job! I just bought my canon HV30 this week and also loving it. But I can't find software that will capture the files as avi. I sued premiere pro 2.0 but had no luck capturing. Have any suggestions? I wanted to see what your workflow was. Thanks.
  • Clan McCloud 2 months ago
I use Premiere CS3 to capture footage. I've been capturing as MPEG-2 and have been happy with the results. AVI would probably be a bit better since it's uncompressed, but it'll obviously take WAY more hard disk space too.

Congrats on the HV30 purchase. You're going to love it. Can't wait to start seeing your uploads.

    Nicely done.

If you'd use Edius (NLE), then it's a one-step process to remove pulldown and edit in HD, etc.
I guess it's too late now, since you have Vegas :)

    Keep up the nice work.
    You've got imagination dude!
