Very nice as always! 01:03 is a really neat angle. Any story on that car from day two?

If the EX3 has interchangeable lenses, why the need for the Letus?
  • Philip Bloom 5 months ago
still half inch sensors so the DOF control is no different. The Letus also gives the whole thing a more organic look even without shallow DOF

Gotcha. Just tracked down some stuff on it online, kind of bummed it's coming out so soon! EX1 I hardly knew ya.

I'll be in Vegas tomorrow man. =)

Organic? What on earth do you mean :-)
Downloaded and enjoyed. Very nice. I have no idea, seriously, what you mean by 'organic'. Can you point me to where I might see organic versus non-organic, or less-organic perhaps. I googled the word. No help!

    Whatever, great work. Cheers. John

I agree with Philip's description. I often refer to the look of the Letus as being organic also. What it means to me is that it strips the picture of anything clinical or digital. Nice smooth edges on extremes and a warmth that I cannot duplicate using the native lens of a camera. It also adds a "life" to objects in terms of their place in 3D space that helps me relate to the depth in the picture.

  • Alexander kubalsky 5 months ago
By organic I think he means the Letus takes off the sharp edge associated with video, and in a more uneven, random way than might be done with a softening filter in post.

The slow shutter effect on the birds landing at 00:14 is excellent.
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
by the way John, you and Alexander look alike. Are you related?

Organic as in more natural. Less harsh and video like.

It also means free of pesticides, not battery farmed and general good for having positive Karma!! :-)
  •
  • John McCully 4 months ago
No way! Alexander is way more organic looking than me! I mean, it's obvious when you really look closely. I might appear more natural but don't be fooled by appearances. (I was going to say film-like but the words just wouldn't come out.)

I'm about to take a look at your website. I bet there is with and without somewhere there. If I don't find what I'm looking for doesn't matter - the inevitable dose of positive Karma makes the visit very worthwhile.

Many thanks, and keep up the greatness.

So, phil, explain what the difference is between interchangeable lenses on the EX3 and using a letus... I read the comments about "organic" looks, but technically, does the sony now have the option of mounting Nikon/Canon lenses onto it? I am confused!

Darn.. and I just got my EX-1. Been holding off as long as I could but had a special project to shoot next week. I think the only 2 things I want from the EX3 that's missing from the EX1 is the framerate dial and the shoulder pad. Think those two worth dishing out for?
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
no. get the shoulder mount mentioned on my blog for $40
  • David Cheok 4 months ago
    Which one? $40?

just search for shoulder support in your local ebay site and it will come up! It is so good, way better than the ex3 shoulder pad.

Very nice :) Really enjoyed this one. Are all the people shots candid, or do you ever have them sign a release form?

There's definitely something in there that gives this movie a slightly better look than a lot of your previous work. Perhaps it's the Letus Extreme? Although something that seemed absent from this short is the chromatic aberration that I've seen in a lot of EX1 clips including a few of your own Phil. Could it be that Sony have improved the optics in the EX3, or maybe the Letus Extreme has helped reduce the CA?
  •
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
    candid.

All my other ones were with letus extreme. There should be no difference to my others ones. The EX3 is the only variable in the mix, but I don't think that is it at all to be honest. personally I can't tell the difference.
  • Glenn (Avene) 4 months ago
Oh yeah, of course.. must have been half asleep when I wrote that! Got the extreme confused with the new model Letus have just released and thought you may have been using that.

By the way, nice review of the EX3 you posted on XR. Ever considered buying a Red? A company I've been doing some work for bought one, and the image quality is insane.

    Hi Philip,

Nice work mate! Couple of questions: What lenses did you use? Is the vignetting an aspect of the Letus? What, if any, gamma / cine gamma / contrast controls does the EX3 have?

    cheers,

    Kim
  • Philip Bloom 4 months ago
Hi Kim, The Vigenetting is done is post, i love my vignettes! The EX3 has the same paint controls as the EX1. It is after all the same camera in a different body!

Lenses I used for this were mostly my nikon 17-35mm f2.8 and 80-200mm f2.8

every time i watch your stuff it makes me wish i had gotten a letus for my ex1 in time to shoot a feature we just wrapped.

David, if you have rails or intend to buy them, you can make a great shoulder mount by purchasing a replacement shoulder pad made for a larger camera. i jury rigged an adjustable panasonic shoulder pad to my rails and its awesome.

Dear Philip thanks for your review.
I just got a grant to buy a new camera, I am coming for Panasonic DVX100, and when I wrote the proposal, several months ago I was interested on a JVC GY-HD200 u which I actuallly liked very much but I have been redirected to the Sony EX-3. Based on your experience would you go for the EX-1 over the JVC, the issue is the 5.000 difference between those 2 and the other difference is the possibility of changing lenses in the JVC. Thanks! e.
  •
  • sur y north 3 months ago
Correction.... the $ 5000 difference is between the JVC and the EX-3 which I cannot afford right now. The EX-1 is still within reach. My apologies for the confusion. e.

    Hi Phillip,

This video was great! I especially thought "day 3" was beautiful.

I'm a film student in Orlando, FL and I'm looking to buy a camera in the very very soon future. I was in a toss up between a Panasonic HVX200a and a Sony EX1, I'm very much into solid-state memory camcorders, both with a letus35 extreme setup. I decided i would choose the HVX but now I'm confused again.... With the EX3 is a Letus necessary? I'm not totally sure how the interchangable lenses work. I.E. HVX with a letus vs a Sony ex3 with no letus? Do you or anyone who might be reading this know of a test done on the EX3, one shot with a letus setup and another shot without the letus but both with the same lenses? I would be very thankful if anyone could help me out here. I need to purchase my camera very soon and any help would be great!

Thank you and sorry to spam with questions.

    -Stephen
