Atticus Finch, the baby robin my sister and I were trying to take care of, died last night.

I never thought I’d cry this much over a bird. Not only a bird, but a wild bird. I think the worst part is that he died without ever being able to fly.

I’m so sorry I couldn’t take care of him.

It's sad, but it seems like it's impossible to save baby birds.
  • AA 2 years ago
I read online that baby birds should be fed every 10-30 minutes from dawn until dusk. And, really, that was impossible for me to do. I still feel terrible about it, though.

I didn't know that. I named Atticus after Atticus Finch, a character in the book, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atticus_Finch

I love that book. Boo Radley is my fav.

I always thought that young birds were incapable of digesting whole worms and thus needed their mothers to grind them up. I think also that their mother's saliva helps to jump-start digestion. I might be wrong about all of that, but if not - you should have mashed those worms up before feeding Atticus.
  • soma 2 years ago
Yeh, I think you have to mush the food up for them.

Aw... don't feel bad about being sad. YOu should see this video I made after my girlfriend's hermit crab died.... it brings tears to people's eyes, hah.. Sorry bout Atticus.
  • DrPiranha 2 years ago
Plus, don't feel bad, I'm sure he was much happier with you even though he died, as oppossed to if you hadn't come along to help him.
  • charliesteadman 2 years ago
Doc, I was expecting you to say something like let's take Atticus to the indian burial ground so he can walk forevermore as a scourge to the living. Instead, your compassionate, sensitive human side broke through its moldy, cancerous shell of the undead, at least for a moment.
    You big softy.

awww how sad. . . at least he got a chance and a caring person like you to try to take care of him. You did all you could, and now hes in birdy heaven
Sometimes they fall out of their nests before they can even see the world, Atticus looks like he had alot of fun with you so you shouldnt feel bad

i used to have a lovebird. his name was larry and i think he died of a stroke. one day i went to take him out of his cage and he just fell to the bottom of it. i picked him up and he was still breathing, but he couldn't move his body. he died a couple hours later. i feel your pain.

I once saw a baby bird getting torn apart by a raven. I tried to chase it away, but it just flew off with the little birdy in it's beak. Scarred me for life. So chin up! Coulda been way, way worse. Sorry for painting such a joyful picture...

Happy, chirping bird with a healthy appetite. Cut to bird grave. What happened in between? Given that your brother pushed him off the wall and laughed about it...I want to see what happens when CSI Wichita get wind of this.
  • 40 Watt Fantasies 1 year ago
Amazing! Just saw the clip of your brother and his CSI Wichita buddy fucking furniture together! Guess we'll never know who killed Cock Robin Atticus Finch.
