Remington Park’s richest turf race of the 2007 Thoroughbred season, the $150,000 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Breeders’ Cup, went to 17-1 longshot Brego.

Owned by Paul Varni of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. and trained by Bruce Jackson, Brego rallied from mid-pack in the 11-horse DeBartolo field to win by a length over Almost Certain. Smooth Bid was another half-length back in third.

Under Richard Eramia, Brego covered the 1-1/8 miles of the DeBartolo in 1:48.51 over firm turf. He rallied through an opening on the rail as the field turned for home, in order to gain the advantage for victory.
