One of the first shots I did with my new Canon HF10 camera.

This footage was shot in 30P, AE at FXP (higest) bitrate.
It was then imported into iMovie where I added fade in/out and simple title text.

The Original MTS (from the camera) was 376.3MB at 1920 x 1080 with FXP (17Mbps) Quality.

The resulting compression gave me a 249MB file at 1280 x 720 with compression settings of: H.264
2 Pass 10mbps video and 160kb audio

So some more tweaking will need to be done to determine a good / acceptable bitrate for edited content.

One interesting find so far has been the ability to take the original .mts file from the camera and then add .mp4 extension to the file. Doing this will allow the file to playback directly using a PS3.

10mbps for 720p with h.264 is a bit too much. Try 5 mbps average with 8 mbps peak, 128 kbps audio, 1 pass. If your encoder does not support variable bitrate, just use 5mbps.

BTW, the PS3 can playback MP4 as well, no reason for the too large mts files.
