I made this video for my final project in Chase Mitchell's special effects and compositing class at Utah Valley University . It was shot on 0 budget. We had 2 authentic M1 Garands and one German Luger and some airsoft guns. Any questions? Let me know!

were the blood effect done with After effects? Same with the explosions?
  • Stephen Lewis plus 2 years ago
    Oh, and which camera?
  •
  • Chris Newman 2 years ago
The blood effects were free from detonationfilms.com (coolest site ever, even with poor website design) I bought some dirt explosions from them and also made a little air morter and shot wet sand in front of a green screen in my back yard for the really dark clumpy dirt flying up look. I actually did all of the composting in Final Cut minus some roto-scoping in after effects for the scene with 20 dead americans in the field which was really only 4 guys. I shot this on an Panasonic HVX-200 and for the first shot used a DIY 35mm adapter. Thanks for the comments!

    Great job well done Chris.
    Specialy liked the opening scene.
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Thanks Pierre! Yeah this was a really fun project. I would have shot the whole thing with the lens adapter (like the first scene) but I hadn't made the rails for it yet. Thanks for the comment!

Pretty cool, opening shot was hot. You're so lucky that you live in Utah, great scenery-
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Hey thanks Nate! Yeah that opening shot is my fav. Utah is seriously a great place to film, they have every type of scenery here, it is incredible. I'm going to be moving to LA though to seek a career :) . I am going to miss the mountains :(

WOW! That was great. I really enjoyed that. If this is the stuff your putting out for a class project than you have a very bright future ahead of yourself. It maybe be hard work but look how rewarding it is. Excellent. I wish I could do what you do.
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Thanks Tommy! I appreciate the compliment! Anybody can do what I did (and it's really not that spectacular in my opinion), it's just about taking hours and hours of searching, reading online and learning about the craft. I went to school and that helped, but you don't need to. You can pay tons of money at a school and still walk away with nothing if you don't apply yourself. Can't afford school? The internet is a school. My favorite site is dvxuser.com. I would recommend becoming a member and read and read and read.

Amazing job- I did something similar for a project at my school recently- somewhat similar scenery, but more fantasy-like in the visual effects.

great job. I am a tough critic let me tell you, and this is one of the best productions i've seen here. i am judging the cinematography, color, key, light. it's amazing what u did there for the budget.
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Wow, Thanks Carrel! I am flattered by your comment! I am amazed by some of the stuff people come up with on this site. I had a camera jib and dolly with me that I was going to use to add to the production value but didn't have time with the non-paid actors. Still turned out pretty good. Thanks again! That's cool little DIY dolly you have. I'll have to post some pics of mine sometime.

    Nice vid, especially the colors.
    Good job man.
I read in one of these comments you were going to LA, when's that?Good luck there!
    Oh yeah, one last question.
How do you put the 'widescreen' bars on top and bottom? I have FCE 4
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Thanks Stefano! I am going to LA after I finish school and get a job. I made the wide screen bars in photoshop and imported them into final cut.
  • Stefano Dooijes 1 year ago
    Cool, thanks for telling me.
You going to film or regular school?
I'm thinking of not going to film school, instead getting experience making short films, work with other (more experienced) people and just learning on the way.
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I wasn't notified of your comment.
I'm going to regular school in video production. And I got a job in LA and now live there. I work for a company called drumchannel.com editing and compositing. it's pretty sweet.
  • Stefano Dooijes 1 year ago
Looks pretty sweet indeed. Good luck mate.
No problemo on the late response.

the beggining you can see the letterbox you added. Its see through! Just noticed it.
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Yeah, on an updated version I fixed that problem.

    Congratulations on a great job.

One quick critique. Right about 1:00, you see the first dirt explosion. The camera shakes with the impact but the dirt stays stationary. The second explosion does the same thing but it is less obvious due to its proximity to the camera. I don't know if you added the camera shake later or filmed it. If you added it later, be sure to link the effect onto all the layers you are working with (in After Effects I would do this with an adjustment layer on top of everything). If you filmed the jitter, then you need to motion track the shot and apply the tracking data to the explosion so that it looks like it is part of the scene.

It has already been mentioned and I understand you fixed it in a later version but the see through letterbox is kind of annoying. Personally, I don't think the film needed letter boxing as it was already shot wide enough. But I guess it varies from person to person.

Hope this has been helpful. Loved your video, good luck.

Yeah thanks, this was done on a tight deadline and I didn't match the jitter with explosion. I will fix the probs when I get time and re-upload. I like the letterbox :)

  • wow very nice... I really loved the feel of this... Looked very WWII "esque"... I think I would have brought some of the contrast down in the whites and saturation... a bit more.. but could just be me... other than that... very authentic... nice work!!!

Well, Chris 10/10 cool one, i like it and everything here is okey for me.
Best war scene i've ever seen here.

p.s. that scene with dead soldiers reminds me my war scene :)
  • Chris Newman 1 year ago
Thanks Sid! Yeah, the dead soldiers is what reminded me of yours as well. And also the explosions :) Your was much harder though as you had your characters moving. Nice work!

Awesome! I was going to make me a WWII short but since my camera broke I can't budget one at the moment. I'm still going to make it, but I'm just going to wait until later down the road when I can get more money. WWII props aren't cheap! Haha!
  • Chris Newman 11 months ago
Thanks Kyle! Good luck on getting a camera. I love my HVX-200. And good luck with the props, I was fortunate enough to borrow everything I needed.

this is incredible! one thing, when the two soldiers are running, you should have masked out one of his legs and detached it when the mortar hit. also, there is no sound effect when one of the soldiers gets shot and the gun drops. but overall its so awome. one question, when the soldiers are laying down, are they on a greenscreen and you just added more to the plate?
  • Chris Newman 8 months ago
Thanks. Yeah it was a rushed project and I did the explosion scene quickly in FCP. And the missing sound effect is what? a Gun shot? You can see how i composited the dead soldiers on my reel here. vimeo.com/1014233. I used AE for that.
