Very nice! Michael Emerson of "Lost" and his real-life wife on this movie. :)

How much the HV20 was used btw on this feature film?
  •
  • Mark Holmes plus 2 years ago
Hey Eugenia! Thanks for the shout-out. We only used the HV20 for three 4-second establishing shots we had to go back and get months after the primary shoot. All the rest was shot on the Panasonic HVX-200 by our wonderful Director of Photography Elizabeth Santoro.
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru plus 2 years ago
Cool. Did you use any 35mm adapters btw, or just straight with the HVX200?
  • Mark Holmes plus 2 years ago
We went straight to HVX; no adaptor, due to a limited budget, time and lighting constraints. Have a Letus Extreme shipping soon, though. Will use with a DVX and HV20 now, and a Sony EX3 later.

wow nice work, looks funny .. no wonder you won !! :-P

will it come out on dvd in uk ?

how much does Panasonic HVX-200 cost ?

    nice color work
  •
  • Mark Holmes plus 2 years ago
DVD in UK? Hope so! Our first film, "29th and Gay", was distributed in the US by TLA Releasing. "Ready? OK!" is just starting it's festival run this month, though.

I believe the HVX200 is running around $5,000 US these days.

And thanks for the nice words on our color work.

Mark. Congrats on winning FilmOut...that's awesome. Are we going to be able to go see it locally or can you loan us a copy to see at home when the girls are sleeping?

Hey Ryan - Thanks! We hope to be playing OutFest in LA this summer but already have invitations to play five other feestivals - New York, Philadelphia, Fort Worth, a screening in Santa Fe, more to come...

Guess I have to wait for the DVD. I am very anxious to see your film, it looks great. :o)
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Thanks Roger! Checked out your videos and added you as a contact; nice work. It's good to run across Vegas supporters on Vimeo. It's about to make a nice jump in June with the new DVD Architect with Blu-Ray authoring and burning and the release of Magic Bullet Looks v3 for Vegas.

the trailer looks great, so funny. did some of the idea come from "But I'm a Cheerleader"? is it still playing the festival circuit or is it on DVD yet?
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Thanks Gecko; the film was actually inspired by real events from the writer/director's childhood.

Thanks Wynner - looks like you have a passion for effects work, from your videos. You should check out fxphd.com/ and get an early start on your effects training. Good luck!

How the hell did Benjamin Linus get here!!! Is this the effect of the Orchid Station?

Who the hell is Benjamin Linus? And what's the Orchid Station? And what year is this?

Nice video! I got Vegas for editing home movies, but it's nice to see what it can do professionally. Congrats on all the awards, too!
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Thanks - Vegas is really underrated, but it can be difficult to use in the professional world. Everyone and their brother is on Final Cut now, and to be honest, we have a Final Cut setup three feet from the Vegas station. Kind of jump back and forth. But nothing beats Vegas for speed, and it just "feels right" to us. It's difficult for people who are used to the old A-B roll style of editing though.

i saw someone els commented on the nice color work, what did you use to color grade? (color, or just vegas?)
  •
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
We used the existing color correction tools in Sony Vegas. Since that CC work, we've started using the Magic Bullet Looks plugin for Vegas, which I love and would have used extensively had it been available at the time.

i would love a Panasonic HVX-200 , do you think the Panasonic HVX-200(A) is worth the extra cash ?

also did you use p2 cards or ext hard drive or tapes ?

anything you learned on this shoot that you would do differently next time ..

how did you store this film ? you have like terrabyte hd linked or something ? i have no clue lol
    .....
    FCP, AE , MACBOOK PRO
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Hey Anthony, thanks for the interest. To answer your questions...

We shot entirely to three 8 GB P2 cards.
Each card, as it was filled, was backed up to 2 identical 500 GB hard drives for redundancy. We stored the duplicate drives for safety and edited the film with the other two drives via USB2 and firewire.

The one thing we learned from the shoot was that we probably should have moved from Sony Vegas to Final Cut Pro for the editing. IT would have made our post-production sound work much easier, as our sound designer and editor worked with Pro Tools and Vegas could not output an OMF for him.

hi mark, wow your reply was super fast :-)

    ahhh interesting.

:-) im learning FCP right now and AE, i hate learning an app then find i have to learn a more professional app
i should be fine with FCP

im a published songwriter using logic pro, started to do some film,tv music in LA, maybe i could get some songs in your next movie :-) .. you never know.

i started a production company developing new young singers, and i have to make some promo videos, so i gotta learn as fast as i can.

one last thing , i searched "Panasonic HVX-200" on vimeo and all the videos were not as clean and clear as yours.

is that because of your mastering of the movie thru 3rd party company or why ? ... your trailer looked amazing even full screen .. while all others look grainy bigger

thanks mark, good luck with your next project, i'll buy this movie on dvd when its out

    anthony
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Quick? Well, relatively. I'm working in the edit room now, preparing the film for delivery to festivals and our distributor, and while I wait for files to render and transfer, keep going on Vimeo....

Thanks for the kind words about the film; we've been very lucky with the people who have helped us make it look the way it does.

I honestly can't take a lot of credit, as the footage we started with was pretty flawless, thanks to our Director of Photography, Elizabeth Santoro. When you see footage that looks great, no matter the camera it comes from, it's usually because the production had a great DP. It's all about lighting and composition. Thanks to Liz, half our battle was done when we went to color correct and grade. We did all the CC ourselves in Sony Vegas, though. No outside company was enlisted.

Good luck with your training in FCP and AE. And stick with it! They're both great programs and will serve you well.
  • Mark Holmes plus 1 year ago
Oh, and if you want to see the film, we're playing the Long Beach Q Film Festival on October 12th. Since you're in LA, that wouldn't be too far from you, I would guess. You can get more info at our website, readyokmovie.com. Just go to the festivals page and follow the links.

thanks for the info , im actually in England lol, so that may be a problem to get to the film lol

i was in LA in june, but now the people i work with there all use skype so thats easy lol

i agree its not about the camera, but what you do with it etc .. but your footage will look great on the big screen where as even if my fotage is amazing , there would be a problem using it in a real movie..

as your trailer looks great full screen, can you give me an idea what compression settings you used or why does it look flawless, when other hvx 200 vids here look grainy ? i know its not just great DP lol! :-P

Love the trailer! thanks for all the good advice. Yeah, right now we're just trying to create a splash on the internet, and we thought a good way to do it would be to show off the Canon 5d. Capitalize with that and get some fans.

    Great work! Best of luck.

  • Mark Holmes plus 7 months ago
Yeah, I'm actually considering buying a 5D myself, assuming Canon releases a firmware update to add 24P and full manual control. Tired of waiting on a RED Scarlet...
  • Andrew Disney plus 7 months ago
I'm hoping the Panasonic GH1 looks good. It's gonna have 24p
  • Mark Holmes plus 7 months ago
Yeah, but no shallow depth of field because of the smaller sensor. And I love the look o f all the 5D footage I've seen...
  • Mark Holmes plus 7 months ago
Of course, it all comes down to Canon updating the firmware...
