I picked up a cheap geared tripod head with remote made by Mizar Optical Japan. Tested it out in Shibuya. Shot with my Sony EX1 at 1 frame per second.
Enjoy.

EDIT: I mistakenly wrote MD-mount in opening titles but its's actually called the KD-mount.

wow! really nice. do you think it could handle the weight of an EX1 with Letus Extreme attached?
  • Alexander kubalsky 2 years ago
Sami, With adaptor, Horizontally it pans perfectly but when tilted back too far on vertical pans the added weight stalls horizontal pans. As long as its not tilted too far back it should be fine.

thanks! I made an enquiry direct from Mizar optical and they replied: "Wow! The KD-Motor Mount is suddenly a very popular item." :)

I like the use of over exposure at towards the end.. adds that streaking feel and lightens it up. Good work

One more question if you dont mind, does the motor step or does it turn smoothly? Could you use it for slow pans with no timelapse as well?

Will order mine next week :)
  • Alexander kubalsky 2 years ago
It moves very smoothly. No stepping. It moves at a low speed of .02 degrees per second or at a high speed of 1 degree a second. So, yes it can do very smooth slow pans, vertical and horizontal.
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
they would be VERY slow pans though. It does work with Extreme. We worked out the problem today and it is fine now
  • Sami Sänpäkkilä 2 years ago
I like slow slow movement so I think it might be a nice effect for a long scene. If it turns 1 degree / second that will be 360 seconds full turn. Would make a really nice 6 minute dialogue scene where the actors go around the camera. Ideas flowing...

What problem are you referring to having with the Extreme Philip?

One question to you both, I downloaded both your original HD files and the pans do step ahead a bit when I watch them. It might be my computer though.... You dont see it?
  • Alexander kubalsky 2 years ago
Sami, I think it may be a bit of both factors. LCD screens can be jerky and our pan rates have been a little too slow. This evening while shooting, Phil found a much smoother pan on higher pan speed and lesser frame rate. Lets wait and see what he posts in the coming weeks.

    Hi Alexander,

Thanks for letting us know about this altazimuth mount. Great idea to use one of these for panning time-lapse. I own a telescope with an equatorial mount so I was thinking about getting a motor drive for it, but the cost was a little steep ($450-ish). Then I saw this post and decided to look into altazimuth mounts. Lo and behold, I found that Orion also makes s cheap altazimuth mount called TeleTrack. They're MSRP is like $250 but I read somewhere that somebody picked one up for $150 on Ebay. So I went to Ebay, searched for one and nothing was listed, so I set up an e-mail notification thing, and a couple weeks later, got a note that a TeleTrack went up for sale.

5 days later, I outbid exactly one other bidder and scored one for $92 shipping ;-) Just received it yesterday, and it came in (I think) near perfect condition. I'm currently testing it out for the first time. Anyway, wanted to thanks you and let some of the other people here know there are alternatives (importantly one that you don't have to be in Japan to score). Ciao.

    Edit:

    telescope.com/control/product/~category_id=mounts_and_tripods/~pcategory=accessories/~product_id=09441?id=cadf&CAWELAID=130323752

That's the product (the scope is not included ;-)

Alexander, How do you and Bloom achieve that great motion blur. Post? Or is that just the difference between 60i and 24p?

Love your video. I'm new to timelapse stuff. I want to try it out but need some advice. What settings on the camera were you using and what did you use in post.
    Thanks
    Keith
