This was the first trip as part of the Elemental Project. We wanted to film and photograph the Northern Lights so we traveled to Norway in February. When we got to Tromso we found heavy cloud cover so we did a weather forecast for the next few days and decided that the best place to be was the small town of Karasjok. We drove to Karasjok where we arranged to meet a local Sami called Oskar. He had some cabins in the mountains and he took us up there by snowmobile. Boy was it ever cold! But it was worth it as we had clear skies at night and got some great HD footage of the Northern Lights with my Sony EX1. We also spent a day filming the ice fields around the cabins.

Gorgeous undercrank footage of the Aurora. It looks simply organic and alive, and very beautiful!

How did the EX1 fare in the extreme cold? I was amazed the battery held up for the long time lapse sequence from late afternoon to late evening.

The EX1 performed extremely well in the conditions. It was so cold that if we took the cameras into the cabin condensation would form all over the cameras which would then freeze almost instantly into ice. As a result the cameras had to stay outside for the duration of our stay in the mountain cabins. I found there was very little drop off in battery performance despite the cold. I was still getting around 3 hours of use from a single U60. I didn't have any proper covers or heated packs for the EX1.

The Aurora was filmed using a combination of the EX slow shutter and timelapse. Most of the time I was using the 32 frame shutter recording 1 frame every second. I'm really pleased with the results considering Mark was using exposures of between 10 seconds and 2 minutes for his stills.

Thanks for the kind remarks. It was an amazing trip, so glad we went.

In extreme cold such as this... I wear my batteries... yep... attached to a harness, I put them under my clothes and have cables hanging out to connect them to the camera. This helps a lot in helping keep the batteries working.

    Good work...

I think everyone should try to see the Aurora once in their lives, add it to your list of things to do before you die.

    Thanks for the comment.

I wish I had an EX1 some 20 years ago when I viewed the Southern Aurora (Aurora Australis) from Antarctica.
Some great work there up north - eerie but beautiful.

The northern lights were incredible! Well done! How much time passed to get those shots?

In total I have around 20 minutes of Aurora footage from that trip. It took 4 nights filming for around 6 to 7 hours each night to get that.

Getting up into the mountains away from anywhere and away from cloud cover made so much difference.

    Thanks for the kind remarks.

Wow really beautiful. I have never seen the northern light in the flesh and I appreciate that you took the time to get these shots. I know how difficult it is to film in sub zero temperatures. I did an ice sculpture documentary in the north of Siberia and hoped to get some shots but no luck. Although my sony video camera did pretty well I found that the Lcd (liquid crystal Display) froze and only showed smeared images.
Anyway, great video and have to go now watch the rest.
