Waterfront Park, Portland, Oregon.

Some details:
Shooting 1 second exposures every 2 seconds
A total of 2683 images in this video, played back at 12fps.
Shot on 2 consecutive nights. First night was the panning tripod. While we were shooting, a guy called me back about an ad on craigslist for his Peleng 8mm fisheye. We went and picked it up at midnight and brought it along the 2nd night, when we did all the still shots.

A part of this was featured on KATU Ch. 2 Portland on 05/07/08, At least thats what all my coworkers told me the next day because I missed it.
Update: They didn't run the video, just a picture: vimeo.com/1013228

How did you get the pan so smooth? What was your real fps/m with the SLR?
  • Andrew Curtis 2 years ago
I was shooting 1 second exposures every 2 seconds. Check my profile for some info on the panning.

How many pictures did you take? It's awesome!
  • Andrew Curtis 2 years ago
I took 3020 images over the two days and used 2683 of them in the video.

Aren't you afraid of wearing out your mirror mechanism by doing stopmotion movies? I just realised I'd better do those with a P&S. One can hit the 150.000 actuation-mark relatively easy otherwise?
  • Andrew Curtis 4 months ago
The D80 is only rated for 50k shutter actuations. I ended up making it to about 220k before it finally died. I had an extended warranty so I traded it in for a D90 which I'm currently using. The quality just isn't there with P&S cameras.

Yes, Andrew definitely has this down-if you haven't yet check out his vid of the draw bridge.

This question is for anyone---this type of work requires mega storage space (amongst other things I realize), right?
  • Andrew Curtis 2 years ago
The original images take up about 3.5gb (I was shooting fine jpg at 1936x1296 resolution). The uncompressed video is about 1gb.

Did you need permission for this ahead of time? Or did you just go in and start shooting?

Its amazing to think that people voluntarily go on some of these rides!!! lol.

How big are your flash cards that you used for this? Do you use something huge like a 16gb cf card or can this be done with a 4gb card? Which resolution did you select on the d90 for your pictures?
  • Andrew Curtis 6 months ago
The D90 didn't even exist when this video was made, it was shot with the D80, which takes SD cards. I have several cards.

I just saw Edvard Brun's Seattle Center film and he told me about yours as well. Very impressive! We have an event here in Adelaide, South Australia called the "Royal Show" which is a combination farm fair and funpark event in the middle of the city that is run once a year. Your footage is giving me plenty of ideas to have a try myself when that comes around again in 2010 :-)
