8. Canon HF10 (24p): Dr…
This is some test footage shot with the Canon HF10 in 24p and 'cinema' mode. The audio is from a camera-mounted AT Pro24 mic. The clip shows drummers in the Meridian (or Malcolm-X) park in Washington, DC.

Workflow: Import of clips into iMovie 08, adding transitions, export into a MOV file using Quicktime.

After upload I noticed that Vimeo significantly degraded the video quality, the original looks WAY better! :-(

Vimeo's transcoding does degrade it quite a bit when your source is 24p. You see it more when there is a lot of action. I noticed the same thing on one of my videos where the original looks significantly better.

Giganova, nice video, how did you mount the mic to hf10?

I built my own adapter for the mini-shoe. Here's how it looks like:

    Very cool visuals!

In order to do anything with HD, I have to use Quicktime, since my versions of iMovie and Final Cut Pro are too old...

it's my understanding that iMovie '08 doesn't work natively with 24p... you'd need final cut pro

Christopher -- I hear that a lot that iMovie or Final Cut Express cannot handle footage with a frame rate of 24p. However, this clip was shot in 24p mode and exported to a 24 frame rate file, so there don't seem to be problem. Maybe it's because the HF10 24p mode is not a "true" progressive frame rate. In any case, it works fine for me using iMovie 08 and FCE. I prefer the 24p mode in combination with the "cinema" settings on the HF10. It's much more "film-like".

Very colorful for cinemode! Looks great.

24p should be true progressive (e.g. stored as 2:3 sequence). I believe most use the JES Interlacer to remove the pull-down before editing with iMovie. But not an expert on iMove/FCE.

By the way the download link on the bottom right gives everyone access to the original uploaded file.

Where did you get the matte box for your camera... and how did you make the mic mount.. I understand if its a trade secret..
  •
  • Giganova 3 months ago
Geoff -- the matte box is a Cokin Series A filter holder with a modular hood.

I built the mic mount myself using some parts (a screw, some washers, nuts and a plastic spacer) from the hardware store. For some stupid reason, Canon decided to have a mini-shoe, so regular shoe mounts won't fit.

This seems very colorful and vivd for "Cinemode". Did you post-process color etc when editing?
  •
  • Giganova 2 months ago
No post processing. The cinemode has much more subtle colors compared to the other modes, and a lower contrast. Here's a comparison between the cinema and other modes:
