this was done with c/c++ code and directx. a tool was created called 3pxstudio and trace used it to arrange the effects that mac and i coded and sync everything to the music. the more recent demos we've done use another custom tool demoStudio. you can see a screenshot of it in action at: flickr.com/photos/blackpawn/2094000629/
