1. After Whitecoat, by …
This has been my first short film and my first use of the HV20. The setting is in the far future after the
fictitious "biowars" that nearly wipe out all of the human species. Two brothers find a piece of the past...

Damn, nice color! I like the aspect ratio, very cinematic! You could probably turn this into a feature!

    STORY: +7
    Good.

    DIRECTING: +8
    Very good.

    ACTING: +6
The actors are believable in some scenes. Good job over all.

    CINEMATOGRAPHY/LIGHTING: +7
Excellent outdoor shots. Good lighting for indoors. Is that scene where the 2 brothers were arguing done with green screen or maybe some techniques to blur the background? Some shots are soft comparing to others.

    EDITING: +8
    Very good.

    MUSIC: +8
    Excellent!

I really enjoyed this! Great work!

yeah man thanks so much for the comment. Some great feedback there. Yeah for the dialogue we were running out of time so i had to improvise with some green screen. fully aware that it doesn't look too great but you get what ya get.

I enjoyed the story of this very much. It reminded me of some video I saw in elementary school about the dewy-decimal system. It was a cool movie. :D

I liked the story. The dialogue scene bothered me. It seemed it was filmed at two different places. And the mouths did not fit. But I still liked it

oh if only you knew how much the dialogue scene bothered ME! haha yeah i'm aware of how crappy that turned out. One of the actors had to leave and it was our last shoot before deadline so I just threw him in front of a greenscreen and then shot the other actor separately, which made a terrible match up.

    Haha very nice!

I thought acting was good, for the most of the times, except for the chroma-dialogue, which sometimes seemed unbelievable, but for the most it was great!

And also, a quick tip, for the future, you should record also sound FX. You can even do that after recording the scene, by just repeating the actions. Some Sound FX would be great, and i mean it, for the ambientation, like when the guy throws the water out of the bottle, or when the bag falls onto the ground. Also I noticed that sometimes when the two guys walk through the plants, the steps are recorded, others, not. That would help alot.

There's a videotutorial at youtube I'd like to show you. I'll post it later

    The guy explains it well.

Anyway, the short is very good. Continue like that

Liked it, the sound could easily be improved though. While doing a voice over (since they had gas masks) is a good idea it was lacking a few sound effects. Couldn't hear when the water was poured or when branches of trees were touched, for example. Besides that, nice job. What gear did you use?
  • Daniel Weinbaum 2 months ago
Well the thing about the sound, I had planned on doing lots of Foley sound FX and its actually one of my post-production (i have a recording studio in my home), but this was for a contest and i just didn't have the time with the quickly approaching deadline. Gear I used an HV20 (no adapters), an SGM-1x shotgun and ubb1002 mixer (turned out crappy anyway due to the concrete floor where we were shooting making huge reverberation), a cheap boom pole and tripod. Vegas 7 pro for editing.
