Every year, my friends and I go to a small local music festival called Truck Festival (because it's hosted by 'Truck Records'). When we first started going, only about 1500 people went. Since then it has grown and now about 5000 people go. In 2007 it got rained off and postponed from July to September.

Because it got postponed, the line-up changed a bit. I think I've labelled the bands correctly, but I can't be completely sure.

				    A.K.A. The drummer's bane

Out of every instrument that I have played, drums are definitely the most fun. However, they're definitely the most annoying instrument to cart around. I am lucky enough to have somewhere to play them, but they have to be stored away for the rest of the time. This is the process I have to go through before every band practice (and in reverse after the practice!).

Fortunately for you, I've sped the video up by about 16 times!

... apart from the end where I play, that's normal speed...

... or maybe double ;)

At the end of one of our band practices, we decided to video one of our sillier songs. Normally we write our own stuff - mostly funk and rock, but this is a new genre we've invented - DEATH SWING! (a mixture of swing and death metal haha). You may notice the riff is stolen from 'Lose yourself' by Eminem!

Anyway, here it is. We were just jamming it so it goes on for quite a while. Also it's a bit messy, but to be fair we had been playing for four hours before this, and we were all hungover from going out for Mo's birthday the night before. To make matters worse, my kick drum pedal broke at the very beginning of the song (the beater fell off) so I couldn't do the bass drum beat I planned - I had to keep it simple instead. Anyway, I'll stop making excuses and let you watch it!

Bass = Nye

First of all, sorry for not uploading anything for such a long time. I was quite ill for a while and didn't have the energy to edit videos. I'm a lot better now though, and starting to put together the raw footage I have had for ages. So the videos I upload over the next few weeks, will be mainly things that happened a few months ago.

Anyway, this is footage from Guy Fawkes night last year. I got the idea of backwards fireworks from Bill Newsinger's video http://www.vimeo.com/373652

I think fireworks actually look better backwards

My sister's boyfriend and I recently drove down to st. Ives, to meet some of the rest of my family who were already down there. We were only down there for a couple of days, but it was a good little holiday. We also managed to meet up with my older sister and her husband, who were celebrating their one year anniversary.

Unfortunately my stupid computer decided to erase half of the videos and photos I took, so you don't get to see some of the stuff we did - like our crazy night out - but maybe that's for the best!

As regular users of Vimeo will know, it's very easy to meet friendly and creative people here. I've been a member for over a year and a half now, and I think I currently have about 200 contacts, all of which are great. Naturally this made it very difficult to choose who to pick. I decided to pick some of my older friends (not necessarily in age, but who I've known for a longer amount of time on here). It was also difficult deciding which of their clips to show. Basically, I think all my contacts are definitely worth checking out - I certainly can't represent how cool everyone is in this small video.

(0:03) = Blake Whitman
(0:37) = Dr. Piranha
(1:20) = Schroberts
(1:51) = TheJoe1000

All music is taken from the respective person's videos.

As most regular Vimeo users know, our good friend Fuzzy Dave has taken a break from Vimeoland to properly focus on a couple of film projects. In tribute to him, a lot of us changed our avatar to copy Dave's style of a fez and a beard. This is a compilation of all those avatars. Incase anyone is wondering, people appear alphabetically according to the screen name they had when I collected their avatar.

Thanks to everyone who took part. Special thanks to Ojo, who made or altered a lot of people's avatars for them.

I recently discovered a game on the net called "Line Rider":
http://www.official-linerider.com/play.html

The basic idea is to draw a line (or several) and then press play. Then a small guy wearing a red scarf slides down your line(s) on a small sledge. I've also discovered that the game has quite a cult following, with many people videoing their courses for other people to see.

This is a course I made recently. It's amazing how just one pixel here and there can make such a difference.

Music: 'Return to Patagonia' by Lemon Jelly

Warning: This game is highly addictive, but fortunately it has a save/load feature so that you can come back to your prebuilt courses.

<media:description>I recently discovered a game on the net called "Line Rider":
http://www.official-linerider.com/play.html

The basic idea is to draw a line (or several) and then press play. Then a small guy wearing a red scarf slides down your line(s) on a small sledge. I've also discovered that the game has quite a cult following, with many people videoing their courses for other people to see.

This is a course I made recently. It's amazing how just one pixel here and there can make such a difference.

Music: 'Return to Patagonia' by Lemon Jelly

Warning: This game is highly addictive, but fortunately it has a save/load feature so that you can come back to your prebuilt courses.

A few years ago, I wrote a little tune called 'Sad Penguin'. I recently discovered it again, and decided to remake it (in GarageBand). Then I got carried away and decided to make an animation to go with it (although I adapted the tune a bit to fit with the animation). This is it!

Orignally there was a sad ending, but after seeing it so many times (during the animating process) I got really depressed, so I changed it to have this ending. Now I think I went too far the other way, but I can't be bothered to change it again.

Technical Stuff:
I drew each frame in MSPaint (yes, each frame, there's about 1400 of them).  Some of the hardest parts are probably the bits you wouldn't notice unless I pointed them out, e.g. the bubbles when he falls into the water.  I was trying out an animation technique of colouring him in by scribbling, but doing it for each frame so that it constantly changes.  In retrospect it was probably a bad idea, because it doesn't look particularly good and made a lot more work for me!  I put it all together in Windows Movie Maker.  I got the sound effects from 'Klik and Play' - the same program I used to help make this animation;

A while ago someone asked me what it would take for me to shave off my sideburns. It was then that I realised that over the years I have become quite attached to them (not just physically, but senitmentally aswell). I wondered if the bond with facial hair was related to time or amount. So, about 7 weeks ago I started growing a beard, with the intention of shaving it off after a small amount of time, to see how I felt.

It was harder than I thought it might be.

I think having a beard is very comforting - it's quite tactile, little punk kids leave you alone, and I felt a small unspoken bond with other men who have beards (although not so much with the bearded ladies).

Having done this experiment though, I think the sentimental bond is stronger with time rather than the amount of facial hair. I still won't get rid of my sideburns which I've had for about 6 or 7 years, but I was able to force myself to get rid of my beard which I had for about 6 or 7 weeks. However, I think it feels more significant getting rid of facial hair than it does if you change your haircut.

I'd be very interested to know what other people think about any of this, so please leave a comment (particularly if you have a beard)!

My friend James is doing a degree in music technology and sound design, and one of his recent projects is to take a movie trailer, and redo the sound for it. This video is a few different clips of when I went to do a couple of the voice overs for him. James is a very busy guy, so I don't get to see him much, so it was really cool to spend a whole evening with him doing silly voices and trying to make sound effects (hence the hitting things with the umbrella).

The trailer he was redoing was for 'Once upon a time in America'.

Music: 'God is in the radio' by Queens of the Stone Age

(plus other assorted tunes James was showing me, but I don't know any of their names)<br /><br />

I decided to try my hand at animation - Yarrrrgh it takes a long time! There's always a bit of an anti-climax with these things because they take weeks to put together, but then only last a couple of minutes (I'm sure there's an innuendo in that sentence somewhere). Still, I guess I have it forever now!

Music: by me using GarageBand
(if you find it hard to dance along, it's because it's in 7/8)

Technical stuff:
I made the animation in "klik and play" (a really really old program for making simple games in - it can only handle 256 colours). Once I had made the animation, I had to pause it at 0.06 second intervals (although I had to start it from the begining and just extend how long I played it by 0.06 secs each time), take a screen shot, dump it in MSPaint, adjust it, and then put all the pictures together in WMM to make the animation. It was definitely the longest way round that I did it, and there's probably a much easier way. But it's done now!<br /><br />

I wanted to practice editing, so with Jakob's permission I did a short remix of his recent "Eric's new drum machine" video:

This is the result. It's not perfect, but it's only for a bit of fun really.

Thanks to Eric for his cool sound effects, and Jakob for providing the original footage and of course giving his permission for me to remix it.<br /><br />

Tonight there was a lunar eclipse (eclipse of the moon). It lasted from roughly 8:15pm to 2:25am (GMT 3rd-4th March 2007).

Fortunately it was a clear night, so I managed to get a few photos just as it was starting, followed by some film of it happening (although it had to be the lowest quality film I have, considering how long it takes), and finally a few photos of the moon eclipsed. All this was from about 8:30pm to 11:30pm. My camera isn't great at picking up the moon - mainly because I only have a 3x optical zoom, but the photos are ok.

I have access to a telescope, but I'm not sure how to take photos using it (it's a purely optical telescope - no computer wizardry here). If anyone knows of a reliable way, please tell!

More information on the eclipse can be found here:

I decided to make a sort of logo to go at the end of my videos (from now on).

You would not believe the effort I went to to make this. I made it in Debugmode Wax but it wouldn't render. I don't know if it was the program or my computer, but it just didn't want to work. So I ended up capturing it frame by frame, and making an animation in iMovie. This took an incredibly long time because about 100 of the frames took 4 minutes to show, each! Eventually after I made it in iMovie, I realised it had spent longer on each frame than Wax had, so I had to speed it up (meaning I didn't need most of the frames!).

Anway, here it is. A mere 10 seconds long, but about 3 or 4 days worth of work!

Does anyone know what the tecchnical term for one of these is?<br /><br />

As you can probably guess by the title, this is a portrait of Fuzzy Dave. This is actually the second time I did this portrait. The first time I completely screwed up the filming. However, it did point out to me a way of setting my camera to pick out the colour a bit better (the last portrait I did looked a lot darker than it actually was - despite being well lit http://www.vimeo.com/clip:135339 ).

I keep looking off to the side because the cat was making some wierd noises (fortunately not picked up by my camera) which later turned out to be a hairball.

I hope you like it Fuzzy Dave :)

I finally got round to doing the portrait of johnbmx4christ that I said I would do for this project:
http://www.vimeo.com/forums/topic:945

Unfortunately my camera slipped after I set it up without me noticing, so it's not very central. However, my batteries ran out about half way through, so when I changed them over I got it lined up a bit better.

My fat head keeps getting in the way at the begining - it's almost like I was trying to see what I was drawing or something - but anyway, here it is, I hope you like it John. I changed it slightly after I finished filming, but I have included the final picture at the end.

I made this video as part of my present to my younger sister Holly for her 22nd birthday. Her favourite food is Bangers &amp; Mash (sausages and mashed potatoe, and normally gravy aswell - a traditional English meal), so we went to a bangers &amp; mash restaurant in Oxford. On the way to the restaurant, Thom Yorke (Radiohead) cycled past us! Unfortunately I didn't get my camera out in time.

The light levels were quite low in the restaurant, so my camera couldn't really cope, but the food was outstanding, and there was a lot of wine, and a lot of fun. The singing was outrageously bad! Holly unfortuantely had a cold at the time, so couldn't really smell or taste it, but she had a really good time. I actually only appear in this briefly (0:21) with all my sisters.

Happy Birthday Holly!

Music: 'Lesson 6 (reprise)' by Jurassic 5

'Bangers &amp; Mash' by Paisley Pistachio Ennui
           ( http://www.vimeo.com/clip:107336 )

Note: I reuploaded this to include Fuzzy Dave's song; Bangers &amp; Mash. I would have just replaced the clip, but unfortunately that feature is currently unavailable. Sorry to the people who have lost their comments, but please feel free to comment on it again :)<br /><br />

I was back at my parents house when it was time to film (2:50pm 25th Jan 2007), so this is the back garden (the view I get when looking out the window from the room with my mum's computer in it). Their house is in South Oxfordshire in England.

It snowed yesterday, but then mostly melted, however the back garden is in the shade for most of the day, so there was still some left.

In a week or so I will have been a member of Vimeo for a year! To mark this occassion, I thought I would make a video showing all the different avatars I have had in that year. To make it a little less boring, I've had a go at animating them. This was quite a lengthy process because I don't have flash or anything, so it was literally a case of drawing loads of pictures in MS Paint, and sticking them all together in Windows Movie Maker. Just in case anyone is interested, I also use MS Paint to make the avatars.<br /><br />

A few clips from a 3 day christmas party/chuggathon that we had at my friends Alex and Mia's flat last weekend. Basically it was a few of our friends we were at university with and us, trying to pretend that we were still students. None of us can remember half of these things happening!

Thanks to Alex for picking up my camera and filming random things - I think atleast half of this was filmed by you!

My mum just got a new puppy called Inca (he was named that when we got him). He gets house trained for a year and generally used to being around people etc, and then he gets sent off to be trained to be a guide dog (seeing-eye dog). He looks really exciteable and bouncy, but normally he's actually quite docile. These are pretty much the most lively clips from almost a whole day of filming!

The thumbnail is a portrait I drew of Inca, as a gift to my mum for her birthday.

Guest appearances by Mumma Flashroy, and our older dog Cadfael.

Music: 'Black dog' by Led Zeppelin
(yes I know Inca isn't black!)

Recently, I started "The Never-Ending Story" Project http://www.vimeo.com/clip:115835/context/tag:neverendingstory

When I was trying to work out how to start it off, I decided to make two "Pilots" and then pick the best one to use (Thanks to Fuzzy Dave for helping decide).
We ended up deciding to use the more light-hearted episode, but this is the alternate episode that we could have used. It's a little darker, less comical, and quite pretentious. I wasn't going to upload it but I got bored. Unfortunately the video quality isn't very good.

Please note that this is NOT part of the never-ending story project - merely what could have been!<br /><br />

He had the great idea (with help from FuzzyDave) about putting up clips of himself for people to use in a project. The clips can be found here: http://www.vimeo.com/clip:114698

Having watched his clips, I wrote my own script to fill in the blanks and make a little story out of it! I recommend watching Beaglebot's clips before this video, so you can see what I did.

Thanks to Beaglebot for the footage.<br /><br />
