I'm trying very hard to figure out the best way to encode files for upload, but I'm struggling a bit with all the codecs and stuff. I edit in Premiere Pro CS3, and I encode in AviDemux. I suppose I'm wondering what settings other people have been using with success, but I'm also interested in finding out more about HD encoding in general...can anyone throw me a bone?

Sorry I can't help you more as I am working on a Mac... but for those other Mac users out there here is mine:

Capture from tape to HD via FC6.
JES inverse telecine the HD footage
Import IVTC footage in FC6 project
    Edit movie
Export to h.264 4mbps in Compressor

Here's my Windows XP based workflow:

I generally film in 24p since I'm mostly shooting acoustic musicians in dark pub environments.

Capture and 3:2 pulldown removal using Cineform HDLink, which gives me either Cineform Intermediate .AVI (very fast preview) and/or raw TS.

Edit in Vegas 7 using the Cineform Intermediate .AVI files.

    Render as 720p30 MPEG-2 TS

Transcode to 1280x720 .mp4 using MPEG StreamClip for Vimeo.

Crop to 4:3 aspect ratio and transcode to 6 megabit MPEG-2 for DVD

Crop to 4:3 aspect ratio and render as 1 Megabit .WMV format for upload to YouTube.

    Hello,

    I'm a newb sorry, I had the HV20 one week ago :

    I shoot in HDV [1440x1080]
i capture in SD [720x576] (>hardware by the DV output of the HV20)
i edit in Premiere Pro 2 in a SD 16/9 project
    But...
    when i export my 9 minutes video in Quictime[720x576 1200kb], i have a 1,8 Giga file ! weird !
Here is the screenshot of my export presets :
    lio.ama.free.fr/vid/pref_ppro2_export_QT_H264.jpg

First, I want just to know if it's useful to compress in H264 even if my project is SD...?
What rate do you use for SD & for HD in quicktime encoder?

My next videos will be in HDV. Just be patient that i feel good with my cam.

    Sorry for my english.

why don't you grab the original 1440x1080 footage when dumping to your PC for editing? 1440x1080 should give you better quality when editing , even though you might end up with 720x576 footage in the end. do you use firewire to dump to PC? i use hdvsplit and a firewire cable to dump to my PC in pure 1440x1080 .m2t files.

and yes, i would use mp4/H.264 to compress your SD files as well. does a great job for anything. all my SD files i upload to vimeo are .mp4/H.264 even though they are only 720x480. i always encode an extra time to standard mpeg2/DVD format so i can back up on DVD. but also back up my .mp4 files on DVD in data mode so i have them.

i have adobe premiere pro cs3 which comes with the H.264 templates built in. i use VBR 2 pass with 5mbps average and 7mbps peak. 48Khz 192 for audio.

is it better to export the work into an mp4 file rather than .mov? I'm a newbie. I have iMovie. hv20.

Mark is right. Capturing HD and downconverting at the end will give you a MUCH better final product.

I just got the HV20... took a fireworks show.

I just got the quicktime components and quicktime pro, use iMovie and use expert settings for export, exporting as an mpeg4 best quality... it seems to work... if anyone is interested I can get the detailed specs of the exporting process.

With Premiere, my suggestion would be to edit the footage in HD 1440x1080 50i, which is the native format, then output it to a MPEG transport stream (M2T) in 1440x1080i 50i with 25000 KBit/s and then render this with AutoGK to a DIVX file in 1280x720p. This tool has the very big advantage that you can define "500MB size" and it will choose the best quality settings for this. So, you can upload the best possible quality to Vimeo, where you are limited to 500 MB. You need to buy a divx professional codec for around 15 $ in order to use AutoGK, which is for free.

Does anyone know why alot of videos including all of mine look stroby/motion blurry/out of focus/hurts eyes. When filming movement, or panning with the camera? I shoot in 60i but have seen a couple really good looking videos that are perfect and do not show this.
