An overview of the festivities of WMPG's 13th annual Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras event that took place a short walk away from the actual station location in the Student Activities Center of the University of Southern Maine, in Portland. A series of DJs hosted the event spinning NOLA music and taking requests from listeners. The event used to be held @ the station , which can no longer house the crowds adequately. hundreds of people showed up, many sampled the offerings of local Cajun cooking talents. there was live music, raffles, lots of food to sample, the biggest benefit was seeing old friends and meeting new listeners alike. Some of the university students were selling beads to fund an alternative vacation, where funds raised went to a contingent of students to go down to NOLA and work on a HABITAT for HUMANITY house being built for a family who lost everything, now that's cool. Community radio WMPG has been on the air since 1973. It is one the web @ www.WMPG.org streaming 24/7. If you are in the area for the 14th annual Fat Tuesday Party next year show up in time for the great Gumbo , Jumbalya and great community. 'til next year.

A big Congrats to The Bayou Kitchen a fixture for the "Cajun" in all of us here in Portland. Like several other competitors they had a version for the veggie folk and the carnivoriuos. Both were an extreme delight in flavor and texture this chef knows his Jumbalya . Another local eatery that celebrates great food and rallys to the call of supporting a great community radio station and an event that is right up their ally. Also the only restaurant with a myspace page! Legendary Barbeque and Gumbo master Jon St Laurent one of a competitors in WMPG's festivities on Super Fat Tuesday cooked up a seriously highranking delicious Gumbo with one of the cooler names of the event; SockitTuMe Ham & Shrimp Gumbo I love these events I get to reacquaint myself with old (getting literal now) friends like Jon who's well know in this town for his finger lickin' good offerings. Another Long time player in the food department(even fine dining for that matter) here in Portland, Maine is Bintliff's American Cafe. Long active in supporting community radio and taking part in WMPG's Fat Tuesday events over the years as well as a myriad of other support during Begathon etc. Well known for it's selection of brunch menus & it's excellent dining here in Portland, and now they are in Ogunquit too. Long time player in the (micro) Brew Pub scene here in Maine is Gritty McDuff's (likely one of the very early players as well.) better known as Gritty's known certainly for it's Brews as well as a social hub for music and grub . Gritty's was one of the many competitors in WMPG's festivities on Super Fat Tuesday cooked up some seriously delicious food for the event; They are ever expanding in the Southern Maine market and have never forgotten WMPG's Fat Tuesday's festivities. Jessica Lockhart said it was her cat Furry's entry into the competition lots of Kale and tasty Claire enjoy some of Furry's delux treatment of the soup @ the festivities both these women are power house producers and longtime members of WMPG radio volunteer & hired staff positions. Both assets to the flavor of radio in Maine. All I could get out of Furry was muted meow.

Well There was some break dancing and then there was this dancer in stiletto heels, oh listen to the story as DJ Adira tells it, since she was there & I was not. She told this story to her listening audience just before I left and said go ahead post it! DJ Adira took DJ Jacques place right after my show on Fridays on WMPG, she is an amazing dancer (anykind) but specializes in Belly dancing and Tango.

Longtime local musicians Brad Strauss (guitar), Rob Sylvain (Dobro), & Haakon Kulweit (Fiddle) play a number @ the start of their live performance on Fat Tuesday celebration for http://www.WMPG.org 's 13th annual event @ the student center on the University of Southern Maine campus in Portland, Maine. This trio becomes a septet later when joined by two horn players a drummer & bass (I could be mistaken on the bass) over @ he newest club/restaurant in Portland, Maine called the Empire Dine & Dance on Congress Street. Okay so it's just a computer on display @ the recent (super) Fat Tuesday event where the Campus Computer store was hawking their wares,,, primarily showing(off) this 24" iMac. Holy moly! I think I've seen my next computer!
