Staff Blog / Turning off uploads for a few hours...

UPDATE 2:50pm: We're back on!
So we've been getting slammed with uploads the last few days (breaking all sorts of records) and a bunch of you are experiencing various issues. Sometimes the clip fails, sometimes our air traffic controllers place your clip in a 'Holding Pattern', sometimes the clip just doesn't convert.
First off, sorry for all the trouble. We know how important your videos are and we're working hard to fix these issues.
For the next few hours we are going to turn off uploads while we sacrifice a few more goats and add a few more hamsters to the wheel. We don't anticipate this shutdown to be too long, so check back in a few hours.
If you are having trouble with a clip currently in the system, please post a thread here and we'll take a look.
Again, thanks for all your patience, we'll get things back to normal soon!
Note: In about two weeks we will be adding a bunch of new transcoding machines, so these current wait times will be a thing of the past!

poor hamsters.
I've been linking peeps to this site so no surprise there.
Well, carry on.
Turning off uploads doesn't really change anything...it took hours to convert even a tiny video anyway. Anyone who's tried to upload anything on this site in the past couple months is already accustomed to abhorrently long wait times.
I guess I'm being a dick about it because I've come to expect a certain standard from video-sharing sites and vimeo hasn't met it. I'd gladly trade vimeo's beautiful interface for something more functional.
Ok, I'm done being a dick. I hope everything gets fixed soon because I see great potential here.
To say Vimeo has "potential" is essentially minimizing the years of work and success this website has had.
If you have come to expect something better from video-sharing sites, then why have you decided to come here? You, along with thousands of other new users -- the ones that came here from other video-sharing sites for one reason or another -- are clogging up the intertubes and causing these "abhorrently long wait times." And you know what? We love that you're here.
We love that you're contributing to our community and making Vimeo a success. But you are new here and you need to learn how things work. Here's a handy guide.
Quick Guide to Vimeo Community Standards:
1. Be nice.
2. You can be critical, but you need to be constructive.
3. If you hurt Vimeo's feelings, it will not go unnoticed.
This is not YouTube. The community is founded on creativity and support and transparency. It's a beautiful, hidden creature, but it is impossible to keep great things hidden for long.
Vimeo may never go back to the golden era of 10 minute uploads, but it will get back to a very reasonable rate and as soon as possible because they love us. And we love them.
Try uploading earlier in the day. I find around noon EST is when things are moving fastest. Welcome to Vimeo.

Because some lame Dutchman thought it would be a good idea to have our online video contest on vimeo.
Can you suggest some other video-sharing sites that work better, as you said in your post?
thanks.
Honestly though, is it really that hard to start your upload and find something else to do? Go for a freaking walk or find some people to converse with or SOMETHING. You don't have to sit there smashing your head against the keyboard for every minute your video hasn't come online. Geez.
Not only is Vimeo a breakthrough in high quality video playback and online delivery, but it's also free. Rhy, like many of us, may not understand the technical ramifications involving the processing of such high quality media (thank you, Vimeo Team, for doing the dirty work for us), but until you see your videos online in a way that has never been accomplished before (without going through the pain of hosting, and paying for, your own space online)-- and when your hard work is finally displayed as it was meant to be seen (after an agonizing couple of hours of head-on-keyboard smashing action), that's when you begin to ask yourself how it is that you made it through without Vimeo for so long.
I, for one, recognize Vimeo's dedication and commitment to quality and advancement. People who complain about upload times after having used "other" video-sharing sites are like the spoiled kids who got an iPod for Christmas and later stormed into the Apple Store demanding a refund because putting music in it was "too hard" or "took longer" than their ugly Zune, which actually broke after a month.
Thanks for the hard work, Vimeo.
Vimeo, you guys are doing a great job. Truly, vimeo is the best online video service to date (especially since Stage6 died). How long until Google tries to buy you?
& retire goats!
I thought I'd heard the last them :D
Go for it, we're used to technical intermissions from our previous site, now you're just making us all feel at home - cheers & good luck ;-)
some vimeo dude: I am serious, and don't call me shirley
good luck men, women and animals of vimeo.
we salute you.
What makes vimeo for me is the HD support and the excellent service when things fail. Post the issue and things usually are resolved quickly.
Hope you guys can sort out the growing pains and keep making vimeo even more beautiful and functional.
best

Edit: pressed the button save changes, then go to video and it says upload failed... :(
When I uploaded my last video, the only upload that worked was babyface. I fell asleep sometime during the upload, and when I woke up, there was no sign of the video. Oh well, at least the regular site was then working. It took about 5 hours to upload, wait, transcode and then appear online, and the results were excellent. Since then, I've been responsible for people schlepping gigabytes of pixels through the tubes, and they have all said what a great site this is.
Thanks for your hard work!
by using persuasive essays
glad you guys got the problems sorted, well done!
i've just uploaded a video and has been converted but now comes up saying 'undefined'. i've not seen this message before and couldn't find any posts about it. the video is at: vimeo.com/1017023
cheers
Cheers for the free service!
I wonder how long that mental link will last, lol!
Love your site!
It looks like, when I uplaod a file that is over the limit (ex 600 MB) it shows me a error and when I pick a smaller file, the scrip starts uplading me the big one. You can delete this message if you don't whant others to find out this.
Greate job with the site :) Excuse my stupid english.
Thanks again, for providing such a high quality, FREE service, and good luck w/ continued growth.
