New Features

  • Improved Searching
We've been waiting for this. The toolbar search is now much more accurate.
  • Daily Email Update
You can now receive a daily email full of what's happening in your Vimeo world. Sign up is located in your notifications settings.
  • Converting time during transcoding
Ted and Casey added a nifty little feature that will display the time remaining to convert your video during uploads.
  • Login and Join Vimeo Lightbox
Clicking on most login and join links will now trigger a lightbox overlay where you can quickly login or join Vimeo and stay on your current page.
  • Better referrer statistics
Now we record every page that videos get embeded on, check it out in the stats section to the right of any video page.
Everyone says they hate it, but everyone has a MySpace profile! We've added MySpace to the Sharing options.
  • Badge additions
You can now add channels and albums to any Badge that you create. Yipeee!
  • New Hubnut Behavoir
From now on, the Hubnut will not auto-rotate when it is loaded on a page. This will only affect all newly created Hubnuts, not those that are currently used on other sites.
  • Search Channels
Now you can FINALLY search for Channels. Use the 'Search' magnifying glass on any page, make sure its set on 'Channels', and search away!
  • Posting to Flickr
It's back! You can once again post your videos to Flickr. You can also post albums. Do this by clicking on Share and navigating to the "Post this..." tab.
  • Expanded Tag Browsing
Clicking a tag from a video will bring you to an improved tag browsing experience. Now you can browse videos with that tag in your videos, all videos, your contacts' videos and more. Vimeo members who use that tag most are also noted.
  • New Avatar Feature
Clicking any "avatar" aka user portrait will bring up a menu of actions you can take regarding that user. Use this menu to add contacts, subscribe to videos, and send messages to users you see on Vimeo
  • Sorting Channels
Now you can sort channels in the Channels Directory. Just click on the headers like 'videos' or 'subscribers' and it will sort accordingly. We're one step closer to searching for Channels! Yay!
  • Spam Filters
We've recently rolled out some great new spam filters that we think will help keep spammers off of Vimeo. Of course its impossible to stop ALL spammers, so if you ever see any send an email to Help@vimeo.com and we'll take care of it.
  • Add Multiple Email Addresses
Now you can add multiple email addresses to your account and then sign in with any of them using the same password. Just set one as your main address, verify it after we send you an email, and you're all set.
  • Let's clarify some stats issues

When we launched v5, we failed to get all the Stats features taken care of. Honestly, I think we sort of lost interest in keeping track of them -- at least, that's how I felt, because I was focused on watching videos and testing the site. But after uploading a few new videos that I am proud of, I can now say that I miss the thrill of watching my number of Views climb. I don't pursue "Views" directly, nor at any cost. I frown upon the moronic behavior of urging strangers CHECK OUT MY VIDS. Vimeo is well-organized; you generally don't see videos unless you're searching them out, or have asked for them in some way (for example, by subscribing to all videos your friend Likes). So a View on Vimeo is usually well-earned, and is something to be proud of. After releasing something you're proud of, it's nice to know what sort of impact it's having.

The first clarification: a few Stats features are missing. The first is on the Video page, where you should see a breakdown, by day, for that video, of how many Views it had and which referring URLs have sent traffic to it. We hope to have this fixed no later than the beginning of next week. The second is on the Home page, where, when logged-in, you should see stats for your videos from the past few days. We aim to have that restored by the end of next week.

The second clarification is that the numbers of Views have not been increasing for the past few days. All that data is stored safely in our logs, but there was a "clog" in processing those logs. We are currently unclogging it and all up-to-date stats should be restored by the end of the day today. I'm especially eager to see data on my own videos. Well, not especially - only. Thanks to Tommy Smith and James Boyk for bringing this to my attention. Also, we're building better tools for monitoring the conditions that cause the clog.

A third clarification is that a View is now counted by someone actually hitting Play on your video, whether on Vimeo.com or embedded in another website. Previously, a View was the number of times someone loaded your video page, and did not include embeds. In my opinion, this is a huge improvement because now Views have more meaning. This should be bad news for anyone who pursues high numbers of Views as its own goal. I'm not sure that many, if any, of those people are Vimeo users.

A final issue that doesn't have to do with Stats: "Your subscriptions" in the Inbox on the Home page was not updating properly; many videos which should have appeared there did not. We fixed it this morning after I noticed complaints in the forums.

As usual, I will read all and respond to some of the comments below.

I am glad to see that Vimeo is getting back the functionality that I noticed was a little screwy after the upgrade. I am very excited to be posting new videos on Version 5 now. And I am so thankful that the staff has been so quick in responding to the feedback from the Vimeo community.

I noticed how all the people I had tried to subscribe to in the past week have been added to my subscriptions now, which is great because now I don't have to go find them and add them to the list!

      Thanks so much once again!!

Good to hear you're on top of it. I'm not so stats-obsessed: I'm glad if people at all notice it and maybe comment, but it's always nice to see whether or not people notice *at all*.

Off topic, slightly, but relevant overall... One thing I spotted is "Featured Music", but this shows a broken image. Is that a new feature, or does that peruse the "music:" tag one day?
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
      Where did you spot that?
    • Rob Mientjes 1 year ago
Well, take my latest video (I know no shame), and it's on the left. vimeo.com/232538
I have the original order of the boxes, I think (I know it's a local setting), and it's at the bottom, below the Flickr photos block.
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
ah, that's bug. we'll fix it.

We will eventually flesh-out and add that feature, I think. It will be an "official" way to give credit to the musicians whose songs are used in videos, just as you can "officially" add a Flickr photo.
    • Rob Mientjes 1 year ago
Ah, good. That's what I hoped. Thanks for clearing that up.
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
btw, you shouldn't think twice about linking to your video in appropriate situations like that. I was really talking about spam when I said CHECK OUT MY VIDS.
    • Rob Mientjes 1 year ago
Okay, I just knew for sure where I had seen that box and... okay. I'm not for spam either.
    • featured music = awesome!

as soon as that's up and running, i will officially give vimeo a couple hundred chaptunes to go nuts with. (plus new ones whenever i make them.)

Actually, Jakob, now that I think about it, what if I could have a little box on my profile: "Music by me that you can use in your clips."

I'm serious, I would put 200 songs in there on day one.

I know you've talked about creating a library of free music for clips, so maybe you guys are already two steps ahead of me.
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
We're not exactly ahead of you. We're planning something that I think will fulfill this need you're talking about, though in a slightly different way.
    • DrPiranha 1 year ago
Yeah Jakob, I remember you talking about making a library for user created music that could be used in videos. I still really want to do this, so if you have a section of Vimeo, for music to be used, I'll be more than happy to contribute.

Yeah, I can't believe that we didn't notice sooner. Now that it's fixed, there's something new almost every time I load the site. Insane.

"A third clarification is that a View is now counted by someone actually hitting Play on your video, whether on Vimeo.com or embedded in another website. Previously, a View was the number of times someone loaded your video page, and did not include embeds."

      Oh, powerful.

I'll admit, I'm a stats whore. I want to know how many people have watched all my stuff, where they found it, what they thought about it; all that stuff. So this pleases me. Thanks Jakob.
    •
    • Hey, some of us have talked about "Outgoing Stats."

How many videos have I watched lately?

How many likes have I doled out?
How many new contacts have I made?

I, for one, would like to keep my selfishness in check.

I think this could really boost communitage.

and, yes, i just copyrighted that word.

but good news - i'm putting a creative commons license on it, so you guys can use it, too.

    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
Would you mind clarifying what you mean by "keep my selfishness in check"? I don't quite get it.
    • I mean I'd like to keep track of what I'm doing for others, as opposed to what others are doing for me.
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
Do you consider uploading a video as being for others? For example, Me Dancing as a Frog?
    • chriskalani 1 year ago
yeah I want this too, maybe a tab on the homepage stats (when those come) I want to see how involved I am. How many comments I have been leaving, how many likes, views, all that sort of stuff. It is cool to see your interaction and participation with the site.

are you going to bring back the Details feature, so you can see where viewers are coming from. I like to see if someone linked to my video and it's just interesting to see that data.
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
see the bit about "referring URLs" in the second paragraph.
    • Ben 1 year ago
ah............... I should pay more attention.

      v6 - Time line commenting a la viddler.com ?
    • Jakob Lodwick 1 year ago
something like that, yeah. We're currently experimenting with streaming Flash, which is a prerequisite because you can jump to an arbitrary point within the video instead of being forced to download to that point first.

THANK YOU!!! Very excellent of you to fix this, and take the steps to make it better. I [heart] you all, really.

Thing is, while I really dig the Vimeo community, I use your service because it looks and works so well. I want to know about 'views' because I like the feedback. It's that silly little nugget of info that tells us, 'wow, people watch what I'm making, and damn that feels awesome.'

I cannot figure out how to add contacts.
    • SectionJake 1 year ago
You can add a contact by going to their homepage and clicking Add Contact in the upper right quadrant. To get to a user's homepage you can click on their photo. hope this helps.
