“This stuff ought to be the new sound of the city, the new sound of the suburbs and has the snazz to be the first real rock breakout in a long time.” – Midwest Record
"Get Free has everything a band ought to deliver: catchy, melodic songs, gorgeously soaring vocals, killer musicianship and a centerpiece that's a genuine classic…promises to captivate just as many singer/songwriter fans as headbangers. Definitely one of the year's very best. " - Lucid Culture
Devi is a rock power trio from Hoboken NJ, led by a woman NYC music blog Lucid Culture calls "one of the great guitar players of our time."
Devi’s debut album, Get Free, bursts out of the gate with the powerpop gem "Another Day" and closes with a six-minute cover of "The Needle and the Damage Done" that ranges from dreamy to ferociously jamming. This is “an utterly bad-ass power trio,” says Midwest Record, with “a sense of humor, swagger, blistering guitar chops, looks, and the smarts to fuse niche with mass market.”
Debra gets compared to singers Sheryl Crow and PJ Harvey and to guitarists from David Gilmour to Dave Navarro, yet she brings a fresh, sharp energy of her own to the guitar and her songwriting. Bonham-style drummer John Hummel and powerhouse bassist Dan Grennes respond fluidly to her every move. Serving the song comes first, but when Devi flexes its collective chops, watch out. Live, the band "jams with joy and abandon. If adrenaline, crescendos, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful playing are something you would enjoy, get your ass down there." (Lucid Culture)
“Get Free is about the longing for love and the longing for God, and the crazy things we pursue—from sex to drugs to relationships—to try to appease those longings,” says Debra, a yoga practitioner. “All our efforts to escape from being human help us evolve,” she adds, laughing, “whether we like it or not!”
Devi roped some talented friends into the Get Free sessions, including keyboardist Rob Clores (Black Crowes, Blues Traveler), jazz clarinetist Perry Robinson, sarod player/singer Wynne Paris (Krishna Das), Michael W. Dean (Bomb), Wiser Time vocalist Carmen Sclafani and producer Anthony Krizan (Spin Doctors, Lenny Kravitz).
