I don't know about anyone else, but ever since I got into vimeo, I have been watching less television and watching more creative things on here, as well as cool new movies like 'Little Miss Sunshine' - has anyone else noticed a shift in their viewing habits or noticed that vimeo has affected you in a positive way somehow?
  •
  • Tallulah 2 years ago
Yes! Now, everything is a potential clip for vimeo. I find myself wishing that I had my camera with me, like, all the time.

I've never watched alot of television, but since discovering this site, I allow myself "vimeo viewing time." On weekends, especially if it's cold and rainy (as it has been here) it seems that I'm always checking for new clips/comments. It's become an obsession, really.
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
I stopped watching TV because it generally sucks. I do, however download programs I like. I just noticed channel 7 have started advertising the "brand new" episodes of Lost that I watched last year. Apparently they're gonna blow my mind, but I've already seen them.

You know that tagline thing, where they get psuedo-celebrities to say 'thankyou for watching channel 7'. I always hear that as 'thankyou for watching channel 7, because we know we don't deserve it. We suck. We've always sucked, and now we really need people like you to continue watching, because we're going under. Help us. Help us please. We're dying. Oh god, It's so cold. Hold me tight. I can't see. I'm so cold. I'm scared mummy, I'm scared. Hold me!'

Or, you know. Something like that.

Basically TV is shit. In Australia, it seems channels 7,9 and 10 are competing to become the most dumbed down station. And, even SBS has ads during the programs now. And cable?? Fuck that! I'm not going to pay for 8 hours per day of the simpsons, and 35 useless channels, 12 dedicated to sport, shopping channels and christian evangelists 24 hours a day. Even the movie channels play the dickiest crap ever, and rarely play quality flicks.

It's steadily getting worse, and is going to drive itself into the ground. Good riddance.

Tallulah:..why not take it everywhere you go?..i do..i even have camera mounts for my car so i can drive around..i feel naked without at least 1 video camera with me all the time.i look like a man with a purse.

I am the same. And I find myself looking for newer better cameras all the time. I really love the one I have now. I also have a mini triod I carry everywhere inside my purse. When I bust it out people trip out, haha. But T.v., Since kids not much of what I watch is "adult" anyways. But I too mostly watch Vimeo.

I agree: great little cocky head nod. I also think vimeo will lead to people being exposed to lots of little natural expressions and movement and suddenly, TV will look EVEN MORE plastic than it does now.

This kind of sums it up haha

i always have my camera, charger, and mini tripod with me at all times. it goes in my backpack that goes with me EVERYWHERE.

i look at almost EVERYTHING as a potential video. i think my husband's getting sick of it, but i can't help myself. on the other hand, my nieces love it!

I agree - I was brave enough to break out the camera in the shopping centre today and record something - that really showed me just how powerful an average person can be - little camcorder, 10 minutes later, online for the world to see...

    'real' reality television

  • dalas verdugo 2 years ago
Yeah, talk about TV looking plastic, last night I was watching the SuperBowl and there was a commercial for *yet another* Crime Show, and all of the actors totally looked like ACTORS.

Why would I want to watch a show about pretty/handsome actors? They're annoying to look at.
  •
  • dalas verdugo 2 years ago
Also, related to what LCF said, don't be afraid to film in places you think are "off limits."

You pretty much have the right to film anywhere you want until someone tells you to stop. NOTHING BAD CAN HAPPEN TO YOU.

I want to make a video about this, telling people about their rights so they're not afraid to film in places that feel "forbidden."
  •
  • Jakob Lodwick 2 years ago
Well... to clarify, someone could punch you in the face or smash the camera out of your hand. But legally, your rights are quite formidable.

dalas, I like that video idea. Take some anti-anxiety pills and go for it.

I was filming friends after graduation in a local shopping centre as we all went to eat to celebrate - two security guards came up to me and insisted o stopped filming right away, attach the lense cap and put it in a bag (a medium sized Sony digital camera)
I didn't want to fuss so I obliged but also asked why I wasn't allowed to shoot - according to centre management, anti-terroism policy - so they basically said people filming/taking photos in the centre could pose a security/terroist threat - it was pretty obvious what I was doing but I was having a good day - didn't want to screw it up...
  •
  • Jakob Lodwick 2 years ago
LCF, I think you should stand up for yourself when someone pulls the terrorism card.
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
You can buy those terrorism cards, in decks of 52.
  •
  • LCF 2 years ago
Jakob: I agree, It was pretty darn obvious I was capturing memories with friends after graduation - but those guards at *that* shopping centre would be difficult if I was to disagree with them - ie it was a good day - I didn't want to spoil it by getting myself and/or friends kicked out the complex.

A few days ago we had bad thunder/lightening and my HDTV box isn't booting atm (needs a reset) but I haven't been bothered to do it. If this happened one year ago, I would have been on to it the second I noticed :P

"In Australia, it seems channels 7,9 and 10 are competing to become the most dumbed down station"

    amen and amen.

thank the good Lord for ABC and SBS.... and bit torrent.
  •
  • LCF 2 years ago
don't forget ABC2 :P They show the stuff that might not be commercially viable - hopefully CH31 will go digital soon too so that we can community access in crisp quality.

For me Channel 10 seems like a preppy teenager - young and immature, full of bling but no real content
Channel 9 is trying to be the suarv Sydney station - but it seems so detached - extremely commercial, big monster organisation kind of thing.
Channel 7 is a bit better but I can see how it is trying to get some of 10 and 9 into itself, effectivly destroying what I thought was a decent station (ie a mix of Australian and American)

ABC is conservative and I hope they stay that way (although cutting the Glass House was a big mistake *grr*)
SBS is the rogue person with the crazy makeup in the corner - different, a bit unusual but once you get to know them your life is much better.

Anyway, enough of my crappy analogies :P

American ABC's 20/20 must have been tuned into this very subject. Last evening they did an hour program about video, specifically YTube, killing TV.
  •
  • dalas verdugo 2 years ago
YouTube is killing TV by having all the same crap from TV, only low quality? Oh, excuse me, I mean all the crap from TV from the 80's, in low quality.

  •
  • Chromazone 2 years ago
I should have said that the 20/20 show wasn't specifically ABOUT YouTube, but sadly they were the only site referenced. They showed many cutsie pet clips, dejected lovers' videos disin' their Xs and candid Iraqi war shots some funny, most not. The show basically implied imo that viewers are fedup with all the crap that's on TV and if the networks "don't get it" we will find other entertainment.

took my camera into a casino (oohh that's a no-no!) and got off a few shots before security swooped down on me and ask me to leave. I knew I was bein' bad but was feelin' fiesty and wanted to have some harmless fun. .."but ossifer, I didn't knooow!"
You can't take a camera into Whole Foods grocery stores either.
  •
  • johnbmx4christ 2 years ago
.in las vegas there is 1 casino you can video in and thats the nascar (aka nascrap) one inside the sahara..always ask first of course but the security there told me that thats the only one that will let you do that, you can even point it right at the machines in that particular portion of that hotel..the other hotels and casinos will let you video certain things as well such as atriums and stuff but normally not the actual casino portion.

Just check to make sure Australians have the same rights as Americans do first ;) Wouldn't want you to get in trouble because we've been talking about a different country.
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
Yeah, LCF... We don't really have any rights compared to Americans. Basically the government is just being nice to let us live in peace most of the time.

Of course, I don't think we have a 'patriot act' equivalent yet, but it'll only be a matter of time.
  •
  • dalas verdugo 2 years ago
Haha! I just mean that there could be some Australian law about filming on private property that we don't have. You never know!
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
    privacy.org.au/Issues/Photos.html

Just from browsing this quickly, it doesn't seem that they've come up with any laws to stop you filming... I'm still reading though.
A good one was that there was a proposal to add a blanket ban on filming at Bondi Beach. Oh dear, they do try their hardest, don't they.

Here you go, this should be relevant to NSW: 4020.net/words/photorights.shtml

    Bad news I'm afraid LCF.

    "Private Land

Every time you enter private land, you do so with the understanding you consent to any requirements the property's owner may impose upon you. Irrespective of whether the land is freely accessible to the public, if a property owner (or their agent) tells you to cease taking photographs, for whatever reason, then there is nothing you can do about it. Stop it.

As pointed out by Professor George Williams in "Picture this: city puts photo ban in the frame":

The law would say that once you own land you get to control what goes on there.

The basic problem is that so much of our space these days is out of public hands and in control of private enterprise. [%u2026]

[T]he law recognises few public rights on private property. It is a very large debate around the world. It has become a big issue in the US where shopping centres can ban people wearing T-shirts with political slogans, and the courts have sought to define quasi-public spaces.

Hence the difficulty taking photographs inside department stores, shopping centers, "walmarts" or supermarkets. They may be areas freely open to the public and might also be regarded as the "village square or commons" of our time, but they are still private land, and thus come under the control & regulation of their owners. Which means they can prohibit almost anything (including photography) on their land and there is nothing you can do about it. Their turf, their rules. No Bill of Rights in Australia = no Freedom of Expression.

Once you leave their property however, there is nothing to prevent you from taking photographs from outside its borders. This was the finding in the 1937 Victoria Park case, and it is still law. Thus for example the July 2006 photography ban at Melbourne's Southgate Precinct was carefully limited to pictures taken inside the centre. Even management admitted they were powerless to stop people from taking photographs outside.

What if you take photos, publish them, and are then contacted (threatened?) by the property owner, claiming you have no right to display or sell images of their "private space"? Frankly, ignore them. They may be able to restrict you while shooting the picture, but they cannot do anything once the images have been taken (unless of course the photos are defamatory or infringe trademarks, trade secrets etc). As noted earlier there is no general "right to privacy" here, especially for publicly accessible areas. Furthermore in Australia there is no concept of ownership over the appearance of architectural spaces."

-- So, If you are asked to stop - YOU HAVE TO STOP, or at least make them THINK you have stopped. If they ask you to leave, YOU HAVE TO LEAVE. But, once you are off their property you can do whatever the hell you want with the photos or video, you can even continue filming them from the street if you want.
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
Strange that shopping malls aren't considered public areas... The most irritating part of all, is that most of these places are filming YOU all the time. Then they get antsy when you point a camera back at them.

I would have to say, Vimeo definitely keeps me away from TV. I never watched too much, minus a couple of favorite shows, but it helps keep me off television late at night. Colbert has only just started showing in Australia (and only on cable), the Daily Show used to be on free to air here, but I've been [pixie-dusting] them for yonks anyway, so no change in my viewing habits there. I've been [hackey-sacking] all my shows through [candy island], thereby getting around the whole 6 month delay thing when it comes to overseas stuff. (am I allowed to say that?).

  •
  • dalas verdugo 2 years ago
You're allowed to say it, but they might use it against you in a court of law!

Waiting 6 months to see a show based on today's news seems pretty dumb. If you wanted to do it legally could you subscribe to it thru iTunes? Or is it not in the au iTunes store?
  •
  • Paul McClintock 2 years ago
Oh, Daily Show doesn't wait 6 months... but shows like Lost do... Our Channel 7 is only now showing the start of season 3.

iTunes store costs money... ripoff... it's TV! There's no way I'm paying money to watch a TV show. Call me old fashioned but TV is supposed to be free. The whole cable thing is a waste of money too. I'd rather buy the DVDs... which I plan to.

Plus, what is the quality like from iTunes? I'd assume it's encoded to play on an iPod, which would suck.
  •
  • Thommy Browne 2 years ago
The quality of the TV Shows from the iTunes music store is 640x480. I downloaded some older episodes of The Office and watched it full screen on my 24" iMac and it looked great.

Okay... I like getting the HiDef stuff. You know, 720p. But I'm just a resolution snob.

I also pixie dust things and the resolution in full screen isn't too bad at all - I have downloaded some stuff from iTunes but there is artifacting (mind you they are WWDC sessions, not movies)

This great lecutre forwarded to me by Mark Pesce may be interesting to see - the demise of the TV networks and the growth of online distribution.
