    Hi Vimeo users!

A major concern for many users has been the ability to keep their clips private. We have now introduced basic privacy features.

On each clip's page, if you look to the right of the player window, you will see a link marked "Privacy." Click this to set the password for the clip (or you can click the "reset" button to make the clip public again).

After you have set the password, send the URL for the clip's page and the password to everyone that you want to share the clip with.

Here is an example of a clip page URL: vimeo.com/clip:143859

"But couldn't this be made easier? Shouldn't I be able to make groups of people and share my clips with just that group?" you ask.

YES! We fully intend on improving the privacy features and making it easier to share your clips with the people who are important to you. The current privacy features are very basic and only intended to protect your clips until we can implement the more advanced features.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with me.

This is a good feature. I think it could be improved by having some sort of visual flag, on both the "clips" screen and the specific video screen, that shows the user which clips are private and which aren't.

YUP that's what I'm talking about,,,
an icon in the clip's title or after it
or the title being a different color etc,,,
to discern instead of clicking on
clips you are not welcome to view.

please do consider a solution for embedding private videos. like a password prompt.
  •
  • Make the thumb on the protected clip visible for everyone to see and ask for password when they click on it. Sharing the video gallery with trusted friends and family isn't the easiest right now. You have to send link on each password protected clip if you want to share them. Not user friendly.

I'm just bumping this...Now that the nice new privacy options are available, I think it's more important than ever to have some sort of icon on the "clips" screen that shows the privacy status of clips. Without it, one must drill down into the privacy setting of each video individually.

looks great, really appreciate this. thought of an additional privacy level.

How about registered users? Like I don't care if anyone on vimeo sees a certain clip thats logged in, cause I respect the community here - but the unregistered bunch - who knows?

This is a handy feature, definitely.
Is it possible to work it for downloads too?
i.e. Anybody can watch my clips, but only people I allow can download them?

    Desmark: That feature is planned.

Please watch dalas' NEW privacy video if you haven't yet:
    vimeo.com/clip:162060

re: T0dd, CTD3, Larøds: thumbnails will be invisible to people who do not have access to a clip, so a special icon is not applicable. Please let us know if there's some mistake here.

CIPURA - we are working on that, thanks!

Yes, I love this, and I've always wanted the feature Desmark spoke of, so awesome that you guys are working on that as well.

Thanks Jakob, when the privacy change first took place you could see the thumbnail and I would click on an icon only to get a "you do not have permission to view this clip" (something along those lines) and that was what I was referring to. seeing the clip icon but then being denied to view said clippage.

So the new privacy works that privacy in it's variing degrees, if you do not have access to a clip you cannot see it's thumbnail?
I recently uploaded a clip and changed the privacy so that just my contacts could see it so only they can see it? and their comments on said clip are they as well "private" or are they viewable?
I note there is no "Embed" below clip.

    thanks

    Thanks Vimeo is tops!

"if you do not have access to a clip you cannot see it's thumbnail?"

    Correct.

Jakob, I'm thinking that the special icon would still be helpful for the person who has many videos and doesn't necessarily remember which ones are public, restricted, and private. A simple colored bar next to where it says "privacy" (red for private; orange for restricted; green for public) would do the trick--or maybe something for the thumbnail view of one's own videos.

That is a misnomer dalas; I just clicked on a thumbnail and was told "Since you are not a contact of this user you have no viewing privledges" yet the thumbnail was there go figure.

can i ask about embedding 'private' clips? or possibly password protected, and the password is included in the embed?

I'd like to reiterate CTD3's issue here. It would be helpful to have thumbnails viewable so that someone (like a grandparent) will know that there is a video to click on.
