    StarWarsUncut.com

Hello Vimeonites! You and 472 other people have the chance to recreate Star Wars: A New Hope. The entire movie split up into 15 second clips. Click on one of the scenes to claim it, film it, and upload it. You can have up to three scenes! When we're all done, we'll stitch it all together and watch the magic happen.

I’ve had this idea brewing for a while and have finally executed it with seamless integration with Vimeo! Using Vimeo as leverage for video crowd-sourcing has made me very excited about the possibilites of this experiment. If all goes well, I’m sure there will be more iterations of this project in the future. Have fun!
  • Eric Herron 4 months ago
How do I watch the clips on the site for reference?
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
Just choose a scene and you'll get the option to download the 15 second clip. If you don't want it you can just give the scene back and find another.

hell yeah, me and my friends do photoshop and 3d work respectively so our scenes should be fun to do! any idea if the final movie will be equalized for sound? (great work on the site btw)
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
Yes, the sound will be equalized.
  •
  • Jaime Macías plus 4 months ago
DAMN IT, all done, I think you may have to have an alternate cut to let some other people in. Or let's get the whole original trilogy queued up
  •
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
Yes, I wish everyone could be involved in the project. I have a good idea on how to do that for Empire Strikes Back :)
  •
  • Jacob Borshard 4 months ago
Can you post the format requirements for the remakes somewhere that's easy to find? I know it told me when I downloaded a clip, but now I can't find that info.
    Jacob
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
Yea, I'm currently working on a FAQ that is easy to find. For now though, you can find the format requirements if you click he Upload button.
  •
  • Jacob Borshard 4 months ago
Okay, thanks! It says 'No music is allowed'. Do you plan to put the music in when you string all the clips together, or will the only audio be what we recreate?
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
Two reasons music is not allowed:
    1) To avoid an incomprehensible mess :)
    2) Yes, I probably will add on the Star Wars soundtrack to the final compilation.

I'm relatively new to vimeo, this has to be the coolest website ever. I am not even that into Star Wars but this is a brilliant idea. Wow. Can't wait to get involved in some project, keep up the great ideas!

Thanks, Adam. Just so you know, this is my personal project. I just happen to work at Vimeo, too! :)

  • Acacia Farm 4 months ago
This is at GREAT idea. I'd love to see more. It would be neat if you accepted multiple entries for each clip and allowed viewers to rate them. Then you could automate the stitching together and allow people to view a random version of each clip or just the highest rated.

    Scene 106 added.

not a perfect stop-motion-scene, but made within 2 days without any experience and with realy bad equipment. hope you like it though.
  • Shawn B. Smith plus 2 months ago
So you made it the same way George originally made the movie? =P
  •
  • Pablo Davanzo 4 months ago
Ooops, last second seems to be missing. Don't know why :-(
  • Casey Pugh staff 4 months ago
It seems like the Vimeo encoders tend to trim off the last half second. It's annoying. If you want to get around it, maybe try extending your scene a half second.

  • Carlos Santiago 4 months ago
Hey there, scene 41 is now up and running. Another first-timer production. It uses the same movie sound clip, but make sure to crank up the volume. I hope it makes you smile.

And now, to figure out a way to kill Obi-Wan in a less embarrassing production.

Scene 236 done. I had to do 90 seperate hand drawn images, which took ages. only 5fps, but any more and i would've gone bonkers. I hope it retained the hand-made look!

  • Shannon Galvin 4 months ago
While the new system is being worked on, is there any way for the latecomers to see the original clips and start working on them? Right now when you click on any of the ones that are claimed, you can't see the originals (or download them).
  •
  • Benito Romanach 4 months ago
Alright! Sequence 136 now ready... Thanks to my kids for acting better than me! I took a couple liberties with the sound in the spirit of fun, but tried to stay true with the backgrounds. I didn't have access to a proper green screen and had to manually move around a mask on ourselves... oh well! Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to be part of this unique collaboration.

how do I watch what people have made?
  • Casey Pugh staff 3 months ago
Right now it's a little complicated. You have to go to starwarsuncut.com and click on the blue "finished" button. That will show you all scenes that are finished. You choose a scene and you click the user with the blue border around his portrait to pull up the video. I plan on making a much simpler viewing system.

Also, you can just follow the starwarsuncut tag here on Vimeo. vimeo.com/tag:starwarsuncut

I think I found the answer to my question! For anyone else who wants to update with a perfected version of their video:

Can I replace a video and keep the comments, likes, tags etc?

Sure can! On the top right hand side of a video page you will see the 'Settings' button represented by a gear icon. Click the 'Settings' button and from there, choose the 'Video File' option. This brings up the Replace feature, which allows you to upload a new video file, while retaining the comments, likes, tags, etc, just like you wanted.

"Ben?" Yes, Luke, he is dead, which means scene 362 is ready. Like my other scene (41), it synchronizes to the original movie soundtrack.

BTW, being the 2nd clip I've ever animated, those 227 individual frames did test my tolerance for pain and patience during the shooting and post.

I have some shakycam behind the scenes clips I might also post.

I'm having some trouble viewing the scenes on the website without downloading them, I already chose one, 447 but the line at the end of it gets cut off. Is there any way I can get the next scene to know how to finish the line? there is one word at the end of my scene which i am not quite sure is. the watching original does not work for some reason.

When the project is finished you could make some posters, or a series of posters, using stills to recreate the classic SW posters.

q1 : what about music ? if there is music in the scene, will it be added later or are we responsible for that too ?

q2 : the clip i choose has #22 has a few frames from the next scene, is it possible not to recreate that part ? #23 has the whole experience of leia in custody :)
  • Casey Pugh staff 1 month ago
    1) The music will be added later.

    2) It's best if you recreate as much as possible. If you recreate parts of the next scene, it will make it easier for me to edit and keep the continuity of the film.

  • Thomas Noonan 1 month ago
I think the best way to make all this work good is to keep ALL the scenes free, therefore there will be multiple versions of each scene, and with a vote system (not the like button) people could vote the best scene so the movie would come out great! I saw you are actually trying to achieve this but I noticed that taken or finished scenes cannot be taken :( Some scenes have two versions but I'm talking about leaving everything open with 10+ versions of each scene with a nice vote system it could be really great. Think about all the people that would really work hard on the project but cannot because of this.
  •
  • Why are there scenes with 2 videos??
  • Spinning Blade plus 27 days ago
read the FAQ on the website. Multiple people can create the same scene and then we all get to vote on our favorite version.

Casey I uploaded a video and I made a mistake. So I accidentally presses the delete video instead of the replace video button, and now it says completed even though that it was deleted. Is there any way you can fix this? I have my scene all ready to upload. I did scene 182. I also uploaded back to vimeo using my account not from starwarsuncut.com. Please Help. Thank You
  • Steve O'Donnell 3 days ago
Casey, I did the same thing as 766 Films. Can I re-upload to Vimeo and just make sure I use the same title that starwarsuncut gave my video (Star Wars Uncut - Scene 316)?
  • Steve O'Donnell 3 days ago
Casey, nevermind, I think I figured it out. In case anyone else makes the same mistake, go back to starwarsuncut and find your scene (by going through the screenshot), if you click on that it will tell you that this is your scene and ask you if you're ready to upload. At least that's what it did for me.
  •
  • psolms 8 days ago
if you are keeping all of the videos, a cool feature would be to watch a random series of them (as in pick randomly which video plays for each scene)

I seem to be having trouble uploading my submission. So I tried logging out and logging back in, and I get a message saying I need to authorize Starwars Uncut to my vimeo account. so I do but I just keep getting the same "authorize" screen. What am I doing wrong. :( I went ahead and uploaded the video to my video account, but it is not linking to the starwars uncut page. Here is my submission, scene 445 vimeo.com/7420574

I am having issues downloading any video. I can view Vimeo footage here but on the main SWU site I can't see any trailers or download my scene. I'm running Safari on Snow Leopard. Tried downloading with a PC and same issue occurs. Is there an issue with Quicktime?
