7 lux isn't that dark tho, right?

P.S. I love this form factor. My first Vimeo camera was the first one of this type, and it's really easy to film with. Very easy to get candid shots.

    True

I've seen older cameras do 1 Lux. (Lower number = better)

It seems like they are marketing this to the action-sports crowd but I only say that because they use Snowboarding as an example in that article. Actually I think it is kinda pricey but that's the announced price. Might look more like $300-$400.

This (Sanyo VPC-HD2) camera is HD and goes for $600 on B&H.

P.S. not saying I've used these cameras or know the quality but if anyone has experience using these Sanyo cameras (in this Form Factor) or any brand of camera in this Form Factor, please discuss what you like or dislike about them.

The camera Dalas mentions in the above clip:

    Olympus Stylus 720 SW (Shock & Water-Proof)
    olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1225

Can be found at Costco I believe.

A step up from that is the

Olympus Stylus 770 SW (Shock, Water-Proof, CRUSH & FREEZE Proof)
    olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1287

The 720 shoots in Quicktime Motion JPEG but the 770 shoots in AVI Motion JPEG? What's up with that? It's the same thing I think, just different wrappers? Anyone know for sure?

Also both shoot at 640x480, 320x240, 160x120 all at 15fps. Choppy but still good if you have a steady hand or tripod or little bean bag.

the previous xacti cameras have been pretty good (but not awesome) video cameras, but terrible stills cameras.

I played with a cg65 in the shop, as i thought the form factor looked much more natural.. but i couldn't get the hang of the button placement.. especially the zoom buttons.

I bought the xacti cg65 about a month back. Gotta say I'm pretty happy with it. Tiny thing that takes very good video in it's high quality setting. It records in MP4 which is a bonus, except of course when you have to encode for DVDs. The menu system is easy too. I recommend an extra battery with the thing though.

Word. My xacti sucked at still photos.

I have a Sanyo Xacti HD2 and I hate it. Crappy MPEG-4 "hi-def" makes for poor image quality, and wouldn't you know it? Final Cuty Pro CANNOT edit MPEG-4. What a shame. This looks interesting, though. h.264 is so much better.

I have a Sanyo Xacti HD2 and unlike magalenus, I love it.

I don't use the 720p HD mode that often but I think the video quality is perfect for any simple video projects. The form factor is excellent and easy to use.

Just got an HD2 for a trip out to Yosemite for a family reunion. We're very happy with it. Never had problems w/ MP4 files on iMovie, surprised that FCP can't handle them. Here's a sample video for those interested:

I have a Xacti HD2, and I'm quite happy with it - true, being a 1CCD cam, the image quality isn't the best, and in low-light situations, you get visible noise, but the ability to record 720p directly to H.264 is great, and the form factor means you can carry it everywhere. I would never use it for "serious" filming (That's why I still have my good old Canon XM2), but it's perfect for videopodcasting.

Also, I can't agree with magdalenus - Final Cut Pro 5.1 has no problem editing MP4-H.264 at all.

I have the Xacti E1. At first I found it almost impossible to hold steady. Then I rigged up a small but heavy weight that lowered the center of gravity and it works very well. I turned of the image stabilization because I found that it "jerked" pans and moves. Another problem I had was glare on the viewfinder (probably more of a problem with the E1) and I solved that with some dulling spray when I shoot in bright light.

Otherwise, I am very happy with the camera for web apps.

I shot the following film on a Pentax W20 - It's purely point and shoot, but the choice of kayakers I know due to the pocketability (and waterproofness). The new w60 shoots in HD, though only at 15fps. Can anyone recommend a waterproof HD camera with a bit of creative control?

My Xacti hd700 just died on me. :(

I bought it refurb from Amazon for $250, and it worked great until just recently. I have no idea what happen, but I wonder if it was thunderstorm related.

Anyway, my only real complaint for the camera is that I couldn't find anything that would edit the MP4 format without making me convert it first.
  • kruzer 17 days ago
    Edius will edit anything :)
    and in HD mode!
