I've just finished a simple Facebook Application that displays linked thumbnails of your last 4 videos.
I wonder if there is anyone here who also uses facebook and might like to test my application?
It's still pretty basic, and there are a couple of issues still to sort out, hence the testing request!
I was also wondering if a Staffer might comment on:
1. Can I use the vimeo logo on it to give it some flavour?
2. I haven't submitted it to the directory yet, can I?
3. How do you feel about me adding a PayPal Donate link in there somewhere (if Facebook even allow that, I have no idea, I've just never done anything worthy of it before ;)
You'll find the Application here
apps.facebook.com/subvimeo
Any and all comments/suggestions welcome.
Thank you

I don't think I can answer your other questions. There might be some legal stuff involved (us having to protect our trademark or something). Maybe Jonathan can shed some light.
Edit: I've tweaked it a bit so that the little boxes have a fixed height and really long titles kinda drop off the end.
facebook is that little bit nicer now
This application is not owned or operated by Vimeo or Connected Ventures, LLC.
Also, in the developed by field, use your name and not Vimeo or Connected Ventures.
Thanks.
It would be cool if we could choose which videos go up there, say via a tag or something.
Thanks for that Jonathan, I'll use your logo and I'll add in plenty of 'not developed by' stuff too.
bk@ I thought about doing that and I will look into it, although the API doesn't appear to allow 'queries' as such, so I'd have to manually search through videos for tags, which would be quite inefficient.
I should probably mention (it's in the 'help' for the app, but not obvious) that when you upload a new video, my app doesn't update automatically, you have to go into the 'settings' (click on the SubVimeo link in your applications list) and that will automatically update the profile box again.
This is because the hosting package I have doesn't include Cron support (it costs more :) ), but I am going to try making it a bit more automatic over the next few days.
Thanks again.
sorry, I'll update the instructions at some point today or tomorrow :)
smuggyuk, you can put flash items into the profile, but they have to be clicked on to activate first, which isn't too bad. I think I might add in a 'profile video' option if I get time :)
if you need me to come do your laundry or something so that you have a bit more time, just let me know! I can't wait for that! :)
i was putting Obar in there.
this is really cool
thanks
add me and take a look, if you want: duke.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303351
i'm not going to use facebook for my "real" videos, only old archive ones with lots of facebook friends in them. plus, i'll probably put most of those videos up on Vimeo, too, anyway.
i don't know. i just don't think a lot of those people care about video (or about other people, for that matter) enough to come join vimeo.
what do you think? should i be trying harder to pull people over here?
-Add me as a contact on Vimeo
If non-vimeo users click it, it takes them to a vimeo register page with an indication that once they register, they will be so-and-so's contact. just to help migrate facebook friends to vimeo.
just a thought
that makes it so much easier
instead of importing clips via RSS into notes, this does exactly what i want
It would be excellent to have the ability to embed Vimeo vids within the Facebook structure so that the links don't send people over to Vimeo. I imagine that, with what I've seen of the Vimeo Beta (e.g. Duplo's Tumblr) the new product will show off enough of our community within the video app interface that it's not as necessary to send people out of Facebook to get a taste of what this community is about.
Right now, this app only really acts as a Vimeo badge... which is unfortunate because you can't even pick your thumbnails in the current iteration of Vimeo!
I have a feeling this will all change very soon and it makes me happy. Keep up the good work Vimeo (and that means all of us)!!!
(Oh. And to answer J-Marcus: I love Facebook's new video application. I use it to send private video voicemails, whereas Vimeo is used for public vignettes and fun film explorations.)
you can now!
@themarkpike I can put a function to embed vimeo videos into the profile, but that would come with the following caveats:
1. Embedded Flash on facebook doesn't run automatically, it initially displays a static image (that I would have to supply) which when clicked on gets replaced with a flash object, which would then require a second click to play - It's not a problem in itself, but I wonder if it might confuse people, and could reflect poorly on the Vimeo Experience.
2. An application can only have 1 profile box, so would you want to be able to put many videos in that one box, or just 1? - Again, probably not an issue for most, but I think one of the things that sets facebook apart is that it's not myspace ;) (for illustration purposes, check out my friend's myspace page here: myspace.com/phil_nut - beware the loadtimes!). I'm not confident that I could present a huge list of videos on the facebook profile and still stay true to The Book.
3. Choosing the videos to put up - I have read, although not tested, that the Vimeo API only returns the first ~50 videos, so if I wanted to do a video chooser all in as part of my application's function it would be lacking the full range of functions which would be a shame. If I just had a box that you had to type the video URL into, that would work, but could cause confusion/exploit opportunity/ugliness etc. Again, not necessarily a gamebreaker, but needs thinking around.
I'd love to hear others' views on the above and I am more than happy to build in little extra bits and develop it further, or even make a whole new one that does something else, Discuss! Javelin!
Thanks.
SubVimeo - shows multiple vimeo clips.
options:
-how many (1,2,3,4,5)
-which clips (most recent, most liked, most commented, or hand pick them by inputting individual URLs or clip IDs)
ProfileVimeo - just like SubVimeo, except it shows one vimeo clip, with a larger thumbnail.
options:
-which clip to show (input clip URL or clipID)
I've been anxious to share on facebook, and tired of seeing "other clips" on there.
Kick butt.
just a thought.
"Standardistas" (which I vaguely consider myself sometimes) would point out that links that force a new browser window open are often considered rude ;)
I shall investigate and possibly make it an option.
fyi, activity on my clips since adding the facebook app has gone up a notch.
I wasn't suggesting you're rude for wanting it to pop up, I was really only regurgitating something I've read a few times ;) Besides, it's more that it's rude to assume as a developer that your users want new windows popped up at them, as opposed to users wanting a particular feature ;)
The world of web development is an odd place filled with weird ideas :D
How do people see the services of Vimeo and Facebook video overlapping right now? What's the venn diagram look like?
Personally, for now, I think I'll use Vimeo to post vignettes and short video blogs and Facebook will mostly be used for personal messages and instant-recording reactions to friends.
But it'd be nice to display my Vimeos within the Facebook architecture, though that would end up double-posting my content and spreading out the comments, etc....
dammit! i spend the last hour trying to build something similar, before i had the brilliant idea to check if someone hadnt allready done it :)
and let you choose which ones are displayed?
I'm afraid I've got some really heavy deadlines at work at the moment, all of my development time is going into the stuff that earns me money at the moment :(
I intend to get back to the fun stuff very soon though!
One small thing, on my profile, only the most recent thumbnail is shown. The other three are just two colored bars (old vimeo colors I think) and do not show any titles under them. They still click through to my other recent vimeo clips just fine and show the titles on mouseover, though.
And damn sexy work it is too.
Very recently it's been having trouble updating though - any news on this?
I think I've fixed it now, it works for me.
If it's still broken for anyone, or not updating the profile box, please can you let me know!
