I just recently become a vimeo person and sent an email to all my friends telling them to check it out.

But, I got a response from one of them telling me they could not see it because it is protected. I want all my friends to see it though without them having to do anything but click.

    Is that possible?

There might be something in the Privacy settings for the clips. You need to make sure they are all set to Public.

Also, depending on when they looked, if the video wasn't uploaded completely they may have gotten something that looked like a 'protected' warning.

If none of that is the problem, I have no earthly idea. Ha.

Good luck, and welcome to The Vimeo.

I too am new to Vimeo. I have uploaded 3 videos and have made them Public. Although I can access them through the search facility, should they appear on the Vimeo opening screen? If not, how do people see them without searching?

go to the menu choice videos --> My videos; copy the url and email it to your friends. Or, go to a specific video, copy the url and email it to your friends.

or you can use the 'Share' function located inside the video player. Mouse over your video, click 'share' located in the top right, and you can type in the email addresses of your friends or family or any other users on Vimeo.

Sorry, still confused. I understand how to send a video link to a friend, and even to contacts - if I had any. But how, if my video is Public, can anyone stumble across it. I recognise I could inflict my videos on anyone in the Vimeo community if I were to type in their email addresses - all 2000 of them? - but I assumed the latest video uploads would appear on the Welcome Screen, is this not so, and if not how have the ones that I can see got there? Does this mean people have to join Vimeo in order to view the videos? I assumed Private meant only available to those whom I give the address to, whilst Public meant anyone could see them. Where am I going wrong?

    - Having your video 'Public' does mean that anyone and everyone can see it.
    - Your video will not show up on the Welcome Screen for all to see.
    - For people from the Vimeo Community to see your vids, they could search for them, or find them through you commenting/liking other people's videos. That is really what it's all about.
    - If you aren't out searching through other peoples videos, what gives them a reason to search out you?

Just my thoughts. Hope they helped.

    Hello Andre

I am beginning to understand. I have already done a little searching and forwarded video links to one or two friends via my normal email facility. I guess I make those friends my Contacts. However as I haven't created any Contacts yet, how is it I see videos on the Welcome screen? Are they a random selection? I assumed they would be the latest uploads, presumably I am wrong.

Are you saying that if I comment or like someone else's video, then they and perhaps others would be pointed in the direction of my own videos? At first reading this does seem a bit presumptuous that anyone whose work I like, might be interested in my own, but as you say perhaps that is the point. If so may I presume upon you to search for A Link Restored and tell me if this fits in with the community.

    Thanks
    Roy

Sorry for going on about this, I just want to understand the protocol of the site.

bingo. this is one of the main differences between vimeo and other sites - organic discovery powered by network of caring people in the community. the more you interact, the more you will get out of vimeo.
  • andre 3000 6 months ago
Ohh, i like the phrase 'Organic Discovery'. I will use it at least once a day now.

It might be a bit presumptuous, but then again it might not. Anytime some comments or likes my clips, i go and check out some of theirs. While in the end, i may not add them as my contact, I will have at least gone and checked them out before 'passing judgement'.

I don't know how you are see vids on the welcome screen if you have no contacts. It might be that in the 'no contacts' case it just brings up random vids to show you. Someone from the staff would know better then I.

Enjoy, and hope The Vimeo is treating you well!

do not forget tags, they are very important.
  • Soxiam 6 months ago
ditto. speaking of which... we are working on few improvements for the tag page to make it easier to discover related content.
