For some odd reason my wordpress install is not parsing the new embed code for Wordpress as noted here:
    faq.wordpress.com/2007/11/21/how-do-i-post-a-vimeo-video/

It is not rendering out the video code, it just shows the embed tag as I typed it in. Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

    ( I'm using Wordpress 2.3.2 )

Why don't you just use the proper embed code and not this little hack?
  • Gregory Street 5 months ago
It's because WordPress in its default state strips out all object and embed tags for "security reasons". So most users depend on using WordPress specific syntax to embed objects into the blog. There is a fix (see post below).

Yeah, I disabled the visual editor the first day I got wordpess installed. I never trust "visual" stuff, they never work as perfect as I need them.

I did figure out a fix - if that's what you want to call it. The culprit appears to be the visual editor. Most threads I have read stated that as long as you didn't use or open the visual editor, it wouldn't strip out the "object" or "embed" tags -- not at all my experience since it continued to modify the tags despite me not opening the visual editor.

The fix: disable the visual editor for your user (Admin: users>edit (your user) > uncheck the box that says " Use the visual editor when writing").

Once I turned the visual editor off I was able to use the standard embed code without WordPress altering/stripping it out.

I did what were told above, but nothing would work.
I even unchecked the box that says "user the visual editor when writing". I think I still got a same problem as what gregory street had said on the first comment. :(

I'm new to Wordpress and adding videos to blogs. Just wanted to tell other new users that the Wordpress advice linked to up above by Gregory is slightly incorrect. One needs to add an equals sign ( = ) after the vimeo word, e.g.

    [ vimeo=URL of your video ]

You just enter this code in either the Visual or Code sections. I find it easier to work in Visual mode.

If you try to blog a private video Wordpress will show a lock graphic and "this video is private" warning, and it looks like HD videos in 16:9 format are letterboxed.

With WP MU there has been much difficult problem. In additional to disabling the Visual editor, you also need to remove a KSES filter as written here: binh.name/2007/12/22/how-to-remove-crazy-wordpress-mu-html-filter/

Does anyone know how to embed Vimeo to WordPress in widescreen mode? I hate that WP adds ugly black letterbox bars to my widescreen videos!

I am using the latest WP release and EVERYTHING works beyond perfect, especially with embedding vimeo. May I suggest you upgrade to the current WP release (for many reasons and security reasons) and present this issue in the WP forums @ wordpress.org. They would more than likely be inclined to assist you with your problem.

Like I said, I have 0 problems embedding vimeo videos using the latest release. 2.5.1

I'm just getting the link to the video in my WP blog - even if I copy and paste the embed code. Any other suggestions?

This is if you have the latest version of WP- 2. 5. 1
Here's how I posted video to our WP-

    1. Go to My Account-Edit Profile-uncheck visual editor.
    2. Click on Write
    3. Paste this into your Post box -

    [vimeo vimeo.com/1220115]

Except, instead of my url number for my video, type in yours...meaning 1234567 (or w/e) instead of 1220115.
You can find your url number by going to your video as if you were to watch it. Where you type in the website address you want to go to, there will be your site address for your video. your numbers at the end of the address. Type it in where mines at and publish.

There is some confusion in this discussion, as what works for WordPress.org or WordPress Mu, wont' work on WordPress.com. Currently, I don't there is a solution, you'll want to contact WordPress.com support to encourage us adding wide screen embed support.
