I just joined about an hour ago and made a small test video (http://www.vimeo.com/656919) to see how the password protection works and how I can give one link to a series of password protected videos once I start uploading them.

To conduct my test I logged out, found my video (then fiddled around with album settings to be able to click to it from my profile) and viewed it after typing in the password. All worked well.

Until I decided to navigate away and come back, and found that the password prompt was gone. I shut out of Firefox then opened it up and again the password prompt was gone, my video in full view.

When using another browser the prompt comes back, but what worries me is that if people view the videos on a shared computer and then don't shut out of the program or whatever would be necessary, then other people could see it.

    Any advice?

UPDATE: Even after shutting down the computer and checking the next day, there is no password prompt when I am not logged in. I really think that there should be a password prompt whenever someone tries to view the video, just so that people who aren't intended to see it don't.

And another thing: Why is it that when I go to the video page I get the white screen saying "This is protected and you have access to it" but when I am not logged in and have previously entered the password it just shows the thumbnail? It's like there is less privacy when I'm logged out than when I'm logged in.

It's been three days now of constant logging in and out and shutting down my computer and turning it back on and yet the video STILL does not ask for a password anymore when I am logged out. Is this a known problem? Is there going to be a fix?

Once you unlock a video by entering a password is unlocked ON THAT COMPUTER ONLY. I checked out the link you posted and I can confirm that its password protected-- I couldn't see it. If you want to re-lock that video on your machine, clear your cookies.

Well what about if I give the password to someone who then watches it on a shared computer? That's disconcerting to me, is there going to be any improvement?

Sure, I think there's room for improvement. We could require it everytime (although people complained about that). What if it was a session cookie, so once people quit the browser it relocked?

Pile, should I put in a ticket for this or do you want to handle this?
  • Andrew Pile 7 months ago
    I'll handle it.

I personally would feel best with it being required each time because I know that most my friends don't close browsers on shared computers. ..Though many shared computers at libraries and public spaces have ways to do that automatically, so even a session cookie would be amazing and feel much more secure. Thank you.

Could there be an option for both? So the user could choose if they want it unlocked on that machine or if they want it unlocked on that machine for one session?

Was thinking about this again today while browsing videos, and just wondering what the progress is. Do you know yet when it'll be changed?

    Thanks.

also, any way to disable embeding on protected videos?
  • Soxiam 6 months ago
no, but the privacy control applies the same whether they're on vimeo or embedded elsewhere. only those who have the access (and logged in to vimeo) can view them.
  • elclinto 6 months ago
right, but it can still get passed around.

I have privacy on all of my videos set up where only my few contacts can view the videos. Tonight a friend of mine joined vimeo, and before I could add her as one of my contacts, I got an email saying she had commented on one of my videos! Are my videos somehow not private anymore? I am sorry; I just don't understand how this could have happened.

    I emailed you.
