    Hello!

I have now seen a few videos from Vimeo staff about a scaling on/off button that should be showing up on both HD/SD videos on the site. I've never seen this button and I can't see it when I go full-screen, no matter whether I am in Firefox, Internet Explorer, logged in or logged out.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Ted.

I've seen mention of this scaling option too, but like you I've never actually seen this button.

Out of interest, in this thread, vimeo.com/forums/topic:5378, there is mention of a volume control. I've never seen that either. Is it the same for you too?

again, i'm really baffled. i don't think this is a bug and i certainly cannot reproduce it if it is a bug. the scaling option button should show up to the bottom right corner (just above the button labeled "small") when you are in full screen mode.

That's even stranger Pete... luckily I still see the volume control.

Here is a screenshot of me viewing a video in HD which should have a scaling option: i27.tinypic.com/19wetd.jpg

Obviously I have no idea how Vimeo technically works but I'm gonna throw out some ideas anyway :) Would it be possible that because I am in Canada that makes a difference? Maybe there is a Canadian server that wasn't updated with this option? Or maybe something specific to my account that prevented it from being updated?

i've asked around. we do not believe this is a bug (at least not ours). some of us thinks it might have to do with flash doing strange and buggy stuff when it's running out of or leaking memory. would you mind restarting your machine and see if that helps?
  • Ted Avery 3 months ago
Just restarted, still no scaling option. Also tried this on another laptop upstairs, no scaling option. I have also tried this on my work computer, didn't work there either. I have also tried this using my laptop at school, didn't work there. So that's a total of 3 computers using 3 different internet connections, none of them showed this option.

Given the fact that I didn't even know this feature was supposed to exist until yesterday, I think it is conceivable that this problem may have been around for awhile affecting many users and we just didn't realize there was something missing?

although i still haven't seen this, blake told me today he had spotted this bug once. he couldn't reproduce it (ie. it does not appear to be tied to sessions or clips). we will look into it a little further. right now we are also working on a brand new version of our player that's close to completion.

I too have heard of the scaling option, but never actually seen it. Here are some screenshots.

I see the scaling button on my Windows Vista Sony Vaio laptop, but NOT on my Toshiba, which has XP.

This is one thing that I always wonder. I have never seen it on any computer that I have, either on Vista or XP... there is no such button in full screen mode. Strange.

This is the first I've even heard of a scaling button. So no, I've never seen it using XP and IE 6.

Okay, thanks for the feedback guys... we're launching the new player very soon so hopefully that will take care of this.
  • Ted Avery 3 months ago
Hey Blake, just resurrecting this to let you know that I can now see the scaling button with the new player! :) Thanks!

Yay! i see it on my work XP... i'll check it again once i got home but i'm sure the new player fixed it. Thanks!!!

I didn't see it at work, and still don't see it at work (correction, i see it at work now - it is the last icon at the top of the screen on the right instead of lower bottom right).

    1280x1024 at work.

    1600x1200 at home.

laptop is widescreen, and i didn't see the scaling button before. I'll check that tonight.

we launched a new player today, hopefully this corrected the problem.

Yes, I have the scaling button now, but it doesn't work quite like I expected it to.

When I turn off scaling in fullscreen mode, the video is the same size as it was when not in fullscreen mode, only now surrounded by black.

Here is a video I uploaded:
    vimeo.com/952310

On the page its width is about 500px.
    It's native resolution is 880x480.

When I went fullscreen I was expecting it to be 880x480 surrounded by black. Instead it is still just approx 500px wide.

I thought the purpose behind the scaling option was so that it didn't scale bigger than the native resolution thus degrading quality.

Clicking fullscreen should show the video as big as possible without scaling it up. In other words, it should display its original resolution.

    I just noticed this video:
    vimeo.com/662587

When you go fullscreen with no scaling, it actually gets smaller and plays at its native resolution of 320x240. This is more the behavior I was expecting.
  • Blake Whitman 2 months ago
that is how scaling works. We convert all SD files into their native size up to 506 pixel (the size of our player) and thus anything under that will retain its native size. Since we only create one flash file per SD video, scaling off will only show the size of the flash file we convert videos to.
  • Jeremy Pallazzio 2 months ago
That explains it, and it makes perfect sense. What are the chances of getting it to work the way I described it?

I think it would be better that way. Every video would be able to display at its highest possible resolution without being scaled up or down. Of course I don't know much about programming and it may be impossible.
  • Blake Whitman 2 months ago
probably won't happen for a while, but yeah, in an ideal world, that would be how it should work.
