I noticed that Vimeo has a new interface as of last night (most notable feature is the new full-screen icon which looks sort of like an asterisk) and since that new interface has been present, my Athlon XP2600 @ 2.32GHz is maxed out to 100% CPU utilization when playing any HD Vimeo content, and full-screen playback is no longer possible--the system cuts the audio and the playback of video stutters badly. (This after waiting over dinner for one video to download before playing it back after dinner.)

There is probably some optimizing that is yet to be done on the new interface, but I figured I'd better mention the issue, as it may present a problem to other users who may find that HD playback is no longer possible.

3 days later, and playback is still choppy on my Athlon XP 2600+. Tried to play a video without even going full screen, and the audio was cutting in and out, CPU utilization was nailed at 100%. What's changed about Vimeo's player since last week?

Many people have had playback issues in HD. In my case - I use a 4 year old low spec acer laptop amd sempron 3000+, I used to have horrible framerates, about 1 fps with HD on. I've been bothered by this for a long while, especially because I used to be able to watch HD just fine. The Vimeo staff are aware of my problem, but they couldn't help me either.

But now I have found a solution for the problem all by myself! It is actually quite simple. Here are the steps I took:
    1) Download the official Adobe Flash Removal tool here: kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
    2) Cloze down ALL your browser windows.
    3) Run the removal tool
    4) Reboot the computer
    5) Go to Vimeo, and from there, reinstall the Flash Player.
    6) Reboot again.
    7) Enjoy watching Vimeo in HD in great framerate.

Interesting suggestion. Is it a different version than Flash 9, perhaps?

The other problem I'm seeing a lot for the last 3 weeks is that it takes an hour to buffer a short video. In fact, the last three videos I tried to watch never even appeared when I accessed their pages, so I could not even start the buffering process. It seems like data is coming in at dialup or slower speeds lately and I'm on a 3Mb DSL line here.
Vimeo was great in March and up to the first week of April. Then it got to the point where I can't watch anything anymore. 20 seconds of buffering, 2-3 seconds of play, then back to buffering.
