I finally pinpointed the reason why Vimeo HD on would play choppy on my low spec portable, while in the past, it was just fine.
What were the symtoms: after some seconds, or minutes into a hd movie, CPU usage would go to 100 per cent, resulting in choppy playback (1 fps).
Using Speedfan, I discovered that my cpu core temp was unusually high (80 °C), and that even if the pc was 'idle', every cycle of some 1.40 minutes, the cpu usage would peak at 100 per cent for just a fraction of a second and then would go down again.
After a (very long) process of trial and error , I discovered the cause of all evil: my external Lacie (Porsche desing) external harddisk, usb connected. As soon as I deactivate it, the cpu temperature drops, cpu usage 'idle' is stable, and when playing vimeo HD on, cpu usage is at 70 per cent , which is just fine.

So my advice to anybody with choppy playback: kill your external storage!

My apologies to all those I may have offended in my quest to solve this problem.

Go to LaCie's site and see if there is any updated driver/firmware for your disk. Also, make sure you have the latest XP installed with all the updates (SP3), and you are running an anti-virus and an anti-spyware app regularly.
