Here in Canada, I bought a Canon HG10 for really good price of $700. The regular price is $900. It's a very good camera and I got it at a good price. Although Canon says it can to 1080/24p it doesn't do it good enough. I have it set 1080/60i.

I'm considering exchanging it with a Canon HF10 for $1200, which can actually do 1080/24p (according to reviews). I don't think I'll be able to get a $200 discount on this one.

My question is... Is it really worth $500 to go from 60i to 24p? Will I see a big improvement going to 24p? The content I shoot most are airplanes (small models and big real ones)... Lots of motion, panning and zooming as they fly by.

    Thanks,
    Josh

No. The HF10 uses the SAME algorithm to save 24p as the HG10 does. You will still need to remove pulldown if you want a pure 24p stream, just like in the HG10.

On the HG10, 1080/60i looks really smooth but 1080/24p is very juttery (totally unusable).

Are you saying that on the HF10 1080/24p would also look juttery, given that they use the same 24p algorithm? If that is the case, I'll keep my HG10 (and my $500).

The HG10 has a bit-rate of 15 Mbps, whereas the HF10 has 17 Mbps. Does the extra 2 Mbps help the 24p algorithm on the HF10? The people at camcorderinfo.com says it does.

(By the way, Eugenia, I read and followed your instructions regarding how to prepare AVCHD videos for posting on vimeo. They are very clear and accurate instructions. Thank you very much for you help.)

24p is jittery because it's only 24 frames per second, while 1080/60i it's 60 frames per second. It is not helped by bitrate. So no matter what camera you get, even one that costs $100,000 it will [almost] look the same in terms of motion. Expensive movies are shot very carefully to not create jitter. So yeah, keep shooting 1080/60i with the HG10 and keep your $500. :-)

if your on a Mac you can't do 24 /fps with the HF-10.. Apple doesn't support it.

It supports it if you are using FCS instead of older FCP or FCE/iMovie. There are free ways to remove pulldown for the older FCP versions too, but they are not as good as the built-in way found on FCS.
