    Ok - here is a project for the real Vimeonatii amongst us:

    combining two projects i am excited about:
    Vimeo turns 2
    and
    a Simultaneous Capture

    on February 16th 2007 - Vimeo.com as we know it turns 2 years old {just a toddler}
    and we all want to record something special for that yeah?

    well an idea i have been trying to make happen for years with photographers is the idea of a Simultaneous Capture!
    what does that mean?
    that at the EXACT SAME TIME AROUND THE WORLD - we all capture video.
    and we know that this is what we were all doing at that precise moment {give or take a minute.

    problems:
    we all live in different time zones.
    for some people it would mean an early start, and others it would mean staying up late.

    i say:
    who cares. we just do it.

    here is the PLAN:

    On Friday February the 16th 2007-
    UTC or GMT time: 11:00:00 {11am}
    {UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, GMT is Greenwich Mean Time}

    we all record 2 minutes of footage that captures something of our life and who we are and our loved ones around us.
    {2 minutes for 2 years}
    i think we don't have to do/say/sing the "happy birthday" thing - do that in the birthday project- for this just treat it like a documentary style or whatever...

    don't edit it, just upload it and tag it with:
    vimeo2simcap

    i have picked this time because it is when MOST of the planet is all on the same date.
    it is very early in New York, and ridiculously early in LA
    it is late here in australia, and midnight in New Zealand....
    but it is all the same date and it will be all at the same exact time...

    ok now as i know you are all asking/thinking-
    what is 11am GMT time where i am???

    i'm glad u asked:

    the asterix * means that daylight savings is in effect.

    and i know it is way early for a LOT of our american friends- especially the west coast rollers...
    but it is pretty much the only time we can all do it at once on the same day!

    we can do it an hour later maybe... that takes us australians to about 11pm and put's the new yorkers at 7am..

    what do ya reckon?
  •
  • djp 1 year ago
    LCF!!! sorry mate!
    want to combine or split or what?
  •
  • LCF 1 year ago
    haha DJP it's ok - simple mistake - but I really like this implementation of my 'simulataneous' idea - should be a blast to work with you - I never though about making it for Vimeo's birthday - good job :)

    I reckon we should both edit out our ideas or maybe somehow combine editing - ie music production / video editing - the possibilities are endless I think.

    I'm a bit silly but what 12:00 noon means, 12:00PM, AM ? noon is it afternoon ? I could search a bit on Internet but I prefer seeming stupid.

    Edit : And I'm in, of course !

    OK! JEDI-MASTER
    1) This is totally off topic to this discussion about our project, unless you plan on filming a Rap video at 3AM in the morning in two minutes...
    2) Caps implies you are shouting, thus being rude
    3) By hijacking someones thread, you probably aren't going to get views but rather, shunned and ignored for rude behaviour
    4) I did have a look at your clip, and you should at least put a warning on it for extremely foul language as children freely use this site too and I doubt parents would like them consuming your content.

    Maybe this is ranty but it irritates me when people SPAM here...

    I've got a sort of proposition. I've talked about that after seeing the great collaboration organised by LCF ( vimeo.com/clip:132737 ).
    At the beginning and at the end of our shot, we make a quick move, vertical or horizontal. And during the editing, the transition is a shot finished by a quick move to the left for example and the next one begins with a quick move from the right. I've sort of used this "technic" on my last clip, so if you don't understand what I'm saying. ( vimeo.com/clip:134871 )
    Of course, that's only a proposition, maybe too restrictiv, too complicate or whatever.
  •
  • LCF 1 year ago
    I agree with Remyy - if people can manage this it would be great - make the editing/compositing much easier and it would result in a more realistic outcome.

    If you are uncomfortable or if ths would not work for you don't worry, but if some people could it would make a cool effect :)

    this sounds like a GREAT idea!! 6am isn't too early.. you may get my pj's but hey that is me at 6am haha. I'm excited to see the end result!
  •
  • djp 1 year ago
    whoooo hooooo.

    and i like the camera move idea. maybe we could ask people to limit their clips to about 60 seconds.
  •
  • dalas verdugo 1 year ago
    I'd say maybe even shorter, since you're going to have to include the beginning and ending of the shot in order to do the edit.

    10-20 seconds. Sounds short, but once they're all cut together it will be substantial.
  •
  • Remyyy 1 year ago
    For the movement at the beginning and at the end, it's around 0.5 to 1 second. I've watched again the first made by LCF and almost every shots don't take more than 12 seconds and it's already long (I didn't say boring), so I think for something who isn't moving it's really a maximum.
    I think 20 seconds is already too much. But that's not me who is planning so just a suggestion.

    ok maybe we can make TWO videos-
    one for the birthday
    and one for the joint edit...
  •
  • LCF 1 year ago
    Dalas: I agree - i only ended up using around 5/8 seconds of each clip to keep it moving and interesting

    DJP: since it is a group project, I think group editing is great - everyone make their own version of it and upload (well, those who can be bothered too download/convert/cut haha :P)
