the conversation


in case you're wondering what this kind of video exchange can be like, here's a small sample. in the first part, i talk some (ok, whinge) about all the stuff i have to do and how i can't bring myself to do any of it. in the next part, my partner responds directly to a lot of what i said and gives me some frank advice.

i cut out a lot of the more personal sections of the video, but i think everything i left is pretty exemplary of this project's mission. we get a space to have a conversation around some uncomfortable and boring (especially my part) issues in our lives, issues that otherwise might not gotten expressed at all. i think i'm definitely healthier for having gotten that chance.

despair


this is one of the videos i made for this project. i've decided to post it publicly on the channel for a lot of reasons. 1) i imagine this project, in part, as the process of me getting comfortable enough with myself to display it in public, not just in private. 2) i think it will help people understand more what the project is about. and 3) following assbach (see video on the main page), i think it seems really important for other people to see this kind of video in the public sphere in general. as i've written before, most of the videos posted don't reveal as much about the maker as this one does. i hope that i can change that. i hope that this helps.

174/365: facial tics


i think this video is really interesting in light of the "from me to you" project. i had assumed that people wouldn't be comfortable sharing in a constructive way before the public at large. hence the need for privacy. but here (and elsewhere), assbach really gets into the types of issues that normally don't appear in spaces like this, the types of issues that, i had thought, could be aired only behind a virtual wall. not only does this self-expression help him, but it also helps other people by giving them the courage to express themselves.

brotherhood 2.0


this is one of a series of videos in which two brothers exchange videos every day for a year, in place of any other kind of communication. it's similar to this project in that it uses video as a medium for personal conversation, but dissimilar in that all of the results are posted publicly. you can tell from the videos that they are, by and large, trying to entertain. i wonder how different the conversation might have been if it were private!
