If I'm invited out to a party where i know there will be lots of holiday foods to gobble, I eat a meal just before leaving for the party. By the time I get to my destination, my apetite is satisfied.
Don't feel bad about munching on veggies, but stay away from the creamy dips. They're full of crap, fat, and calories. Remember...drinks have calories too, so be careful.
The Restaurant Situation...
Rule # 1 - Don't eat the bread that most restaurants offer you to graze on prior to your meal.
Don't go to a restaurant super hungry! Eat something light before you go. Once you get there, get a light appetizer if you can. Most appetizers are full of creams or are deep fat fried. STAY AWAY FROM HEAVY CREAMS AND FRIED CRAP!
If the apps aren't healthy, skip them and order a salad with the dressing on the side for your meal. If the salad arrives with giant croutons on it, take them off and putthem to the side. Croutons are nothing but deep fried or baked bread.
Be careful when ordering vegetables at restaurants because chefs typically sautee veggies in oil or butter. If your veggies come to you looking shiny, don't eat it. You'll know if it was doused in butter or oil by touching it because will feel the grease between your fingers. Make sure you stress to your server that you don't want your veggies cooked in oil or butter. You want your veggies steamed. If the can't accomodate, then I would steer clear.
Doing all of the above tricks requires concentration and control. If you lose your head even for a little while, you may have gobbled up tons of fat and calories without even knowing it.
TIP: BE PRESENT WHEN YOU EAT!
I used to shut off when I ate. After a meal, I couldn't even tell you all of things I put in my mouth. It was a really bad habit. But once I broke that habit, I felt in control and happy.
Over eating is one of the toughest habits you can break, but you can do it.
Remember...FOCUS and BE PRESENT.
